Hello all.
I'm researching the 6500K 250 W Iwasaki lamp.
I've read that the R version is a little bluer. Supposedly it
measures in closer to 7200K but after reading some reviews and seeing
a picture of a reef tank lit by one, I'm concerned about it being a
little too yellow. Some sources say that it is THE perfect bulb and
has great color. Others say that it's too yellow/green.
Anyone have any experience with this? I'd likely supplement with
actinic CF anyway but would like to do so minimally.
Thanks,
Erik

One more question here.
I've been using VHO for the last 10 years. This will be my first MH
setup. The plan is to use a 250W HM and a 65W CF actinic (maybe 95W)
on a 65 Hex.
Am I still going to get the ripple effect from the point source if I
use the CF too?

Well, that is a hard question to answer, because only you will know if
it is to yellow or green for you. Personally, I don't like the looks of
a tank that is lit by the eye bulbs without lots of actinic. But if you
want fast growing corals, it is one of the best bulbs you can get.
With your 65 watt PC actinic it will still not be a very blue light,
since your 65 watts is not going to do much against a 250 watt MH bulb.
Now the Eye bulb is a great bulb, lasts a long time, puts out lots of
PAR, just not real pretty, but its price and life and PAR output make it
a very popular bulb for coral farms.

Yea you will still get the ripples, but the actinic will diffuse it a
little, but not too much.

We run 3x400w Iwasaki's over our 180g reef tank and 2x250w over our
55g frag tank, the saki's alone will be a little yellow, the balance
them out we run 65w power compacts but not quite actinic (420nm)
instead use the 460nm Blue and the results are excellent, the
resulting combination is a bright crisp white light. Our coral are
growing like wildfire and we won't use anything but the sakis.
