View Full Version : Wow, there's a rec.ponds?
I'm so surprised ... I had no idea there'd even be a rec.ponds. Well,
what can I say about ponds ...
I like ponds. Especially natural ponds with living things in them. I
don't like so much the artifical park ponds that are stocked only with
goldfish or coy, have bridges and a gazebo, and have an annoying
fountain in the middle. I like REAL ponds. The kind that freeze up in
the winter and you can go iceskating on. The kind that you can swim
in. The kind that are fed by real streams, not water coming out of a
tap.
And I HATE drainage ponds, you know, the ones that developers are
forced to put in. I'm not saying that they're a bad idea; they're
probably a good idea; but really, can't they cover them up?
Hrmmm, what else do I like about ponds ... oh, I like when they're
clear and you can see to the bottom. I don't like muddy ponds. Having
a stream inflow and outflow probably helps a lot to keep the pond water
clear; those artificial ponds that don't have real drainage are always
getting murky.
Well, I think that's all I have to say about ponds right now. What do
you folks like about ponds?

This NG is mainly about man-made ponds. Back yard hobby ponds to keep fish
and pond plants in. Some of them can look pretty darn natural. :-)

Welcome cydeweys.
Unfortunately if taking a poll you'd find the majority here have those:

I'm sure we can find common ground though. :o)
Btw, and this is educational only, not picking on spelling as #002 in the
flame war handbook.... it is koi, not coy, and 1 is a koi and 2 are koi,
just in case someone did know that last little tidbit. :-) ~ jan

Heck, no! They should be stocking them with goldfish & koi, putting up
bridges & gazebos, and maybe an annoying fountain! OK, I don't really
think much of bridges & fountains, and gazebos are just something for
letting you be almost outdoors without getting eaten by mosquitos, but
really there's nothing wrong with a drainage pond full of living things -
but the ones with the most wildlife probably don't make good swimming and
skating ponds.

Fish, dragonflies, frogs, lilies & lotuses.

I should amend what I said earlier. It's not that I hate artificial
ponds, it's just that I like natural ponds better. But I guess I'd
rather have an artificial pond than just a plain lawn.

I may have gotten the spelling wrong but I did get the pluralization
correct!

A majority of the folks here have ornamental ponds in our yards, ranging
from a 30 gallon whiskey barrel to 2,000 gallon in-ground ponds. A small
minority who have been blessed with large properties have ponds in the 1-2
acre range. Most of us have koi, or goldfish, possibly a few mosquito fish,
the folks with the larger ponds stock theirs with bass, trout or catfish.
Most of the ponders here are in north america, a few in europe, so many of
the ponds and the pond owners will be doing whatever ponders do when it's
too cold to play in the water. It's been a while since I've seen anyone from
south of the equator post in here, but they're always welcome as long as
they bring food or booze.

The near juxtaposition of the words "developer" and "swimming" makes
me think of the words "drowning" and "public liability".
What a sad world we live in.
(I nearly drowned through falling in a shallow pond when I was about
3. It was only about 30cm deep, but lined with slabs of concrete sloping at
a few degrees to the centre and well covered with algae and slime.
According to Mum I fell over 10 or 15 times before passers-by managed to
form a human chain long enough to reach me.
It's been a car park for 20 years. Nothing to do with my incident.)

I'm with you liking larger natural ponds, however for getting to see
your koi they are not worth a flip........hence I am compelled or
should I say was ordered by the wife to build a koi pond near the
house..........Got the hole dug already but am mot in a hurry to go
any further on it..........hoping the wife will change her
mind.........its just what I need yet another thing to take care of
and cut into my shop time and naps.

WELCOME!
Always nice to have a new ponder with us. Most of us seem to have
ornamental ponds and they are a source of peace and pleasure once we get
them up and going.
Hope you enjoy your time with rec.ponds
