View Full Version : I Change the Water, yet the Fish still Gulp !

Hi

It seems that everytime I change the water in the tank (I remove about 1/3
to half), after about 5 mins, the goldfish gulp at the surface as if the
water has a lack of oxygen.

I thought the 'new' water contained lots of oxygen (minus a few chemicals).

Is there a solution to stop the fish gulping ?

I get worried that they might 'not last' if they continue to do this.

I live in the UK if that's any help.

Thanks in advance :)

Do you have an airpump complete with airstone running in the tank?
If yes, keep it running while you do your water change.

Perhaps they are looking for food and not gulping for air?

are you treating the water to dechlorinate it? not all water is well oxygenated.
sometimes spraying the water in will oxygenate it better. Ingrid

============================
What do you have in the tank to KEEP the water oxygenated? I hope you at
least have an air-stone running 24 hours a day. Still water in a bowl or
tank is quickly depleted.

Do you know if your water has chlorine or chloramines in it? Properly treat
for whichever one your water has if your water has chlorine or chloramine in
it. Some dechlorinators degrade chloramine into chlorine and ammonia, that
ammonia can wreak havok on your fish. If your water just has chlorine then
you should be able to use any dechlorinator. If your water has chloramines
in it you need a more robust treatment. Make absolutely sure your tank
doesn't have any basically measurable ammonia or nitrites in it. Ammonia
and/or nitrite exposure can cause those types of reactions I think. If you
have well water you need to look at other water characteristics. Good luck
and later!

Thank you guys (and gals) for your input.

I'm assuming the problem might be due to the 'chemicals' in the water.

I have no pump, just a tank.

Actually, come to think of it, the temperature in the room might be
contributing to the problem - it can get rather humid.

Thanks again :)

Do you treat the water with a dechlorinator that also removes
chloramines and heavy metals?

How big is the tank?

You should get a filter, or something that at least moves the surface
of the water so that the tank can have oxygen. This would be the
reason the fish are gulping. An airstone is pretty inexpenive and
would help wonders. All you need is the air pump with the hose and a
stone on the end that defuses the air going in to the water. Try it
out and you'll see how much happier your fish will be!
