View Full Version : Thermometer for tank...Galileo?

It occurred to me last night that a Galileo thermometer would look
really good in some tanks - and would provide a very easy at-a-glance
way to check the temperature. If it was firmly seated (so as not to
fall over and break), can anyone think of any reason not to use a
Galileo thermometer in this way?

that would look cool - I have a galileo thermometer, but it's too big
for my tank (goes from 16-36 degrees celcius in 2 degree increments and
is about 50cm tall).

I'd probably advise against keeping it in a tank of agressive fish, or
big fish (oscars etc). Since oscars like to rearrange their tank at
will, they'll more than likely knock it over and break it - and then
you have the potential problem of the thermometer fluid leaking into
the tank. I'm not sure what's in the glass tube part of a galileo, but
there's bound to be some kind of poisons in the coloured balls!

Just occurred to me - do you live in an area that experiences
earthquakes - because you might have problems then with it breaking.

LOL no - very few earthquakes around here (UK)

Like yours, my Galileo thermometer would be too big for my tank - I
think it's about the same size as yours. But I was thinking about a
smaller one. I had a 30 cm one that would have worked, had my 3-year-
old not broken it. I don't know what the stuff inside one is, but
even when the glass case broke, the floating thingies stayed intact.
