are Frontosa Cichlid (Cyphotilapia Frontosa) very common in local fish
stores? I can't say I remember seeing any before. They seem like a great
fish to have, not to aggressive and beautiful!

Not too common in most LFS. Larger LFS have them sometimes but they are more
$$$$. Find a local breeder.

I love my fronts. They get big but they are pretty laid back and don't
bother the other fish. I was lucky enough to get my pair (male/female)
from someone who was getting out of fish keeping/breeding. I bought
the tank and fish came with it : )
Heres a pic of my male hanging out in his cave

You probably will not see them often in the chains as they are expensive.
Wild caught are frequently damaged by the change of pressure (they live
deeper in the lakes than most of our other tropicals), and they have
small spawns (keeping their selling costs quite high).
For large cichlids, they are quite laid back and shouldn't be mixed with
very aggressive fish (and they need large tanks). They are piscivorous
carnivores, so diet and tankmates are similar to Oscars. Unlike Oscars,
they are imo easier to acclimate to smaller fish. My last Fronts, I
raised to about 6" with Platys, and didn't lose any Platys (and also
never saw a Platy fry). This arrangement seemed to work well and the
water conditions were suitable for both, however a 9 or 10" Front might
not be so cooperative as to not eat the goose who lays the golden eggs
;~).
Frontosa Fantasia has now become part of cichlid-forum, and has many good
articles:

including a map identifying the regional variants around the lake.
