I knew we had one large clown loach (about 6" long), but I just saw two
of them! How did that happen? I guess only one used to be out at any
given time, so we assumed it was only one. :)

ROFL! I've never had a tank big enough to lose a 6" fish.

Well, it's 110 gallons, heavily planted with lots of hidey holes for the
loaches. :) There's a bristlenose male there that I only see once a
month or so.

Size isn't all....I frequently lose fish in the smaller tanks - I
couldn't find Bob the betta for a while in his 5 gall and then he turned
up again about an hour later (I'd been through all sorts of panic even
about to interrogate the cat :-) )....I frequently lose track of the
Pandas in the 7.5 gall Hex tank until dinner time :-) And the Plecs are
a law unto themselves for vanishing acts....
One of my current troupe of Clowns hides a lot of the time but then
suddenly after I've panicked for a few hours turns up.
I did find this post curious and was wondering if the OP remembered
buying the CL in the first place or whether it was a smaller one that
had kept hidden until it grew up..
Nice story though :-)

Heh. I forgot about losing an oto in my 10 gallon tank this summer. I
got a bad batch of otos that gradually died off over a few weeks. I
thought I had lost all of them, even though I never found one of the
corpses. After a month or so, I bought three more. The next morning I
counted noses and to my surprise, there were four out in plain view
nibbling algae in the filter outflow.

LOL - I have absolutely know idea how many otos are living in the 4 foot
Community Tank - I think over time I put in seven...the most I've
counted a few weeks ago was six when I put in an algae ridden plant from
the Malawi tank to see if they would clean it up - job done in 2 hours
:-). For a few weeks I've just been seeing two but today four of them
turned up...right now only one is on view....
I guess in a 110gall tank losing sight of fish is really easy :-)
