Our reefs here have been in terrible shape for yrs now.My late Uncle
has dived all over the Caribbean since the 70's.Most of the reefs
that he explored in FL back then are dead now.
In the 80's,Diadema sp.(urchins) were being taken off the reefs by
man(scientists thought they were linked to some disease).Later, they
found out that they were one of the primary herbivores of the
reefs. With there absence, algae invaded and the rest is
history.Boating,construction,mangrove biotope destruction,coastal
homes and the fertilizers people use for their lawns(there's a reason
that grass not native to FL doesn't grow near the beach) and bad
conservation are just a few of the many things that man has done to
destroy the reefs here.
