Does anyone know how long the bacteria in an external canister filter will survive for, when the filter is turned off ? i.e. when cleaning.

Should I keep the filter media submerged in tank water?
Can they survive in open air?

Thanks

The way I understand it, the bacteria in a canister filter die off very
quickly in a canister filter due to lack of oxygen supply. I have heard this
can start to happen in as little as 20 minutes but it probably depends on
the bioload in the filter at the time. Higher bioload=faster deterioration.

Filter media left floating in well aerated tank water will last much longer
if there is some circulation through the media. Media left in open air will
dry out and this will kill the bacteria. Wet filter media in a sealed
plastic bag with plenty of air will last many hours if moving a tank.
