View Full Version : metronidzole usage tips

I have total of 6 discus, one of them looked like to have the HITH.
Very small air bubble like thing on his head. I bought some
metronidsole (250ml) and ready to use. I'v never used this thing
before.

Here are some questions:
1 What this will do the the health looking discus?
2 Should I wait for a while to see if the discus can recover by
itself?
3 What are the things I should watch for? I know that I should do a
partial change of water every 24 hours while using it and should turn
up the temputure to around 90 instead of the current 86 setting. What
else?
4. What are the chances of losing some fish with the treatment?

Mine is a 125 g tank with 6 discus, a catfish and two plecos. temp 85
to 86, ph 6.9 to 7.0, no ammo. Some plants. I feed them mostly frozen
bloodwarms with vitamines (two times a day), some FishOne flacks (once
a day) but only one of them eating the flacks. It is actually the one
with possible HITH is eating the flacks. I change 40% of water every 3
days or so.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What do you mean by air-bubble like thing? HITH is a pit in the head.
It doesn't protrude like a bubble would. Are you sure this is not a
defect in a scale? Also, make sure that there is not a matching mark on
the other side of the fish. Sometimes folks mistake part of the
symmetric lateral line for HITH.

You said these are new discus. After my experience with my discus, I
wish I had treated with metronidazole at the first sign of trouble.
Metronidazole is pretty mild, and you shouldn't lose any fish. The
things you should watch for are oxygen depletion in the water and
ammonia in case your biofiltration becomes damaged by the medicine (it
probably won't). You are likely to distress your plecos by turning the
temps up to 90F. I'd leave it at 86 and add a couple of airstones for
safety. Daily water changes are good with any medication.

Hope it works. The HITH will be slow to heal over again, but it should
if hexamita is the trouble.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try it over the weekend.

Pleco will be right with 90 if it's got air.
Expect them to go off their food
Metro makes ya feel like ****e. Good to clean out gut critters too
