Is anyone using an RO unit? Why did you choose to use one and have you
since noticed results?
How else have you controlled contaminants in your tap water, or is this
not a big concern with fancy goldfish?

Depends on the contaminants. If you do go with RO, be aware that the
water will be too pure and need added minerals to make it suitable for
fish.
Very few fish could live in RO water, and it would require a lot of
water changes to keep it suitable.
