I would like to know how to make an aquarium, if possible 100 gallons.
I have some koi, and i know that they live in ponds but we live in an
apartment so that isn't possible. I would like to make an aquarium
because buying one isn't good for my budget. I have more than 7 kois
in my aquarium. There are small, 3 inches being the smallest one and
about 7 inches the biggest one. For right now they could fit, but
later on, when they grow bigger its going to be a diffucult task. So
if anyone can help me out, i would really appreciate it.

I have research in the internet but they don't come with diagrams, i
would like someone to help me out with diagrams if possible. O yeah, i
will also like to know where i would have to buy the materials, like
the kind of glass, etc.

Thanks for your time to read this.

this link givs a lot of information with some diagrams. It is for a 55
gallon tank, but the basic priciples are the same.
This tank is 48" long, by 16" deep by 14" high.
Some quick calculations give dims of 96" long by 16" deep by 14" high for a
110 gallon tank.
Or approx 100 gallons with dims of 76" long by 20" deep by 14" high.
1/4" glass or better would be required.( Personally I'd use at least 3/8"
for a a tank that large)

hope this helps.

I've read a lot about this because I'm setting up my first "real" tank
right now - a 55 gallon. Several sources state it would cost more to
build the aquarium than to buy one, and that you should only build a
tank if you need custom dimensions or if you want to and don't care
about the extra expense.

Or if you want a HUGE aquarium (500+ gallons or so) making your own may be
the way to go, but overall they are cheaper and safer to buy than to build.

Due to the cost of this glass thickness, it's usually uneconomical to
fabricate all-glass tanks, especially when you consider the jigging required
to position these heavy plates while siliconing. Regardless, a 100g is too
small for Koi, who easily grow longer than the average 18" width of a 100g
tank. I think you would be better off researching a plywood tank (ie: >500g
with a single pane of glass) or pond inserts (also 500g, self-supporting, no
cover). Note that Koi will also outgrow a 500g relatively quickly.

Google on "build your own aquarium" for many, many pages on home-built
aquariums. Many of these pages give information on where to obtain the glass
/ plexiglass and other components. However, I doubt very much that you can
build a 100-gallon aquarium for any less than it would cost to purchase a
good used one. I get away with it because I scrounge much of my glass and
plexiglass from the dumpster behind the glass shop :)

As a point of reference, I bought a tank that's actually somewhat over
100 gallons (6' x 2' x 1.5') a couple of years ago. The tank, with
glass lid, lights, gravel, and two Emporer filters, came in slightly
under $1500 CDN including taxes, delivery, and setup.

I got the heater for free, and I didn't need a stand (I had a cupboard
reinforced with an extra 3/4" top and internal post) which saved some.
A good stand is essential - the glass + gravel + 130 gallons of water
weigh a substantial amount, so you don't want to place such a tank on
one of those flat-pack furniture units!

Remind me at some point to post some pictures...

There is a reason koi live in ponds. They grow to two feet in length,
eat huge amounts of food, and put out an amazing amount of waste. Seven
adult koi require about 1700 gallons of water with very good filtration
and regular water changes.

Perhaps you could build a 500 gallon tank as NetMax suggests and keep
your favorite two koi.

If you only have room for 100 gallons, consider swapping your koi for
three or four large sarasa comets or shubunkin goldfish. Both types of
goldfish have nice markings similar to koi but don't grow nearly as large.

My 125 g tank cost me about $500 for the tank, $300 for a good cherry
wood finish stand, $300 for filter and graval, $$$ for the fish!
I don't think you can get anything cheaper than $500 for the tank.

As the previous posters said, Kois are not good for tank. They eat and
poop a lot and easily spooked. After that, the grow fast too. Unless
you are prepared to build a 500 g tank, you will feel the same as
today in a year or two. Be aware a 500 g tank holds about 500*4*2
pound of water. That's 400000 pound plus the tank and graval! You
better have a good floor to support it! And make sure you know where
to put it because you will never be able to move it after you set up.

If you have any woodworking skills, you could probably build a stand for
about $100 and have a better stand to boot.

I would, very kindly, suggest that if 200 bucks is a lot, then you cannot
afford to support a 100 gallon tank, let alone obtain one.
