View Full Version : Wilma coming

Well we have the shutters up, the patio furniture thrown in the pool, the
yard picked up, boat filled with water and did large water changes on all 4
tanks and pond. Boy am I tired. Now it's a waiting game to see just how bad
we get it. Fortunately Wilma is not packing quite the winds that Charlie had
when he blew through (173mph 30 miles from us and 110+ right here), but it
still looks to be a bit rocky here. We are expecting 100+mph winds here even
thought it should it somewhat south of us (yes I am crossing my fingers),
but that's plenty of punch to do damage. We needed a new roof and drywall
work after Charlie, but the new roof is suppose to handle 130+ winds, so we
should be OK. We lost power for 7 full days last time, and I lost NO fish,
not one. Thanks to my generator, and the nice guy at Home Depot who let me
in even though they where supposed to be closed for the night. I rotated 1
power cord for 2 hour periods between the tanks and all seemed well. The
other 3 cords were busy with fans, lights, fridge, TV for news, and 1 to a
neibor's house so they had a fan and light at night. I did a big water
change as soon as the water supply was off boil alert and the fish didn't
even know what hit us.
So wish me and my fish (and my family) luck so I can come back and read all
your fine posts again soon.

Good luck and all the best. Latest says it is a Cat 2 so let's hope it
doesn't pick up again....still very frightening I'm sure. Only once went
through winds like that over here in the UK in the 80's and that was
pretty scary....I'd hate to live with it all the time...
BTW I'm curious as to why you throw the patio furniture in the pool. Is
it to save Wilma the effort???

Yes, and so they don't go flying into neighbor's windows. This way I don't
have to stack them up in the house, and they get a cleaning to boot :).

Hope you fare better than my family has done so far this Hurricane season.
Daughter has $30,000 in damage to house due to Katrina in Southern
Mississippi plus all the other stuf they went through..no lights, AC, etc
etc. Mother has lost everything (WHole house destroyed) down in Winnie, TX
from Rita. Sister near High Island suffered severe damage to house from
Rita. All in all about a $300,000 season for my family.

Good luck rick, all the best for you, your family, and your fish! I used to
say to people - "hey it's great living in southern oregon, no natural
disasters!" Then after saying that a few times a little later, the 1994
earthquake happened. It wasn't too drastic, but it was humbling. Then on the
news there was a lot of talk of a massive earthquake expected in seattle
with repercussions down here. Suffice it to say - I don't brag about lack of
natural disasters here anymore! Good luck, and later!

You should have lived a mile from the epicienter of the '94 quake like I did
....humbling indeed.
I wish both good luck and fortitude to all who experience these disasters!

Best of luck. Hope you're on the good side of her. Sounds like you've done
this before and are well prepared.
