I have a 135-gallon aquarium housing 3 Leporinus fasciatus, each about 6-7
inches in length.

Quite often, I see a pair of them swimming side-by-side, pushing against
each other while swimming, as if mating. This happens pretty often.
However, I have never seen any eggs or fry.

Has anyone else observed this behavior or successfully bred them? The tank
is relatively bare. What could encourage them to spawn?

Is there another newsgroup that is better suited for this question? No one
replied in this one.

Perhaps no one has any answers for you at this time. Have you tried
searching, say, on Google, for forums that discuss your fish?

Yes, but nothing is known about breeding them. I feel this pair is on the
verge, but I don't know what else to do to encourage them.

I saw some other newsgroups for fish, this one seemed the most general.

As far as I can see, breeding Leporinus has not been accomplished in
captivity, and no one has reported (at least in English) what to
expect regarding spawning behavior. The authors suggest that the
general description of how to breed Characins in Breeding Freshwater
Fish.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but my best advice is that you follow
your instincts: if you think you might have a pair interested in
breeding, try to mimic their natural habitat and use Characins data
for hints.
