Is there an reef safe material that the submerged pump could be placed on to
reduce noise/vibrations/etc...? The commercial pads nice, but c'mon! $15
for a square piece of rubber? Any suggestions?

A lot of pumps come with suction cups.

Most foams, rubber, and plastics are safe.

Some hardware and DIY stores sell sheet rubber. If not, look in your local
yellow or white pages for an industrial supply company such as Grainger or
McMaster Carr (they have a city desk in just about every major and minor US
and Canadian city). $5.00 will get you five times the amount of rubber
you'd get from a typical noise/vibration isolation kit. Witha soft enough
rubber or a foam rubber sheet, you can tool up your own isolation pad with a
pair of scissors...

McMaster Carr has a good website for doing some research;

A search for sheet rubber turns up a lot of useful products...

Industrial supply co's are a great resource for all kinds of supplies.
Grab a pump catalog while you're there.

Another good source is cooking stores or even some of the Wal-Mart's. They
sell the small square heat resistant pot holders made from 100% silicone
rubber that fit well under the pumps and deaden the sound. You can cut them
to size and they are few bucks a piece....Its worth a look at.
I have them under my skimmer body and pump and my system return pump and
they work great. Been in system for over a yr and no problems and less noise

For $2, you can buy foam blocks made for Eheim filters, and cut it to
the shape you need. Put it under your pump to dampen the vibrations and
quiet that pump.
