Use the 20g, or larger. More is better, because you are adding additional water
volume. "Dilution is the Solution to Pollution"

I'd not use the Rio for a return pump though. Use that to mix sal****er and
pump water in and out of your tank during water changes. I prefer the Supreme
Mag pumps available online & at the LFS.

and on #1, don't use a filter on a reef. use a skimmer in your sump, live
rock in the tank (and perhaps sump) instead.

Are "Supreme Mag" and "Mag Drive" pumps the same
or maybe the names are only similar for two different things?

And if we are already at Mag pumps - how do they behave with
electronic wavemakers without soft start? Do they start hard
like Penquin pumps or rather nice, like MaxiJets and others?

BTW - I see some screws outside the pump outline - are they
stainless steel? I am rather worried puting any metal in the tank.

Marine Depot lists them as Supreme Mag Drives:
http://www.marinedepot.com/a_ph_danner.asp?CartId=

Same thing, just referred to slightly differently.

I've never seen or heard of a Mag pump being put on a wavemaker, but I always here that
using Maxijets with one works out great.

I don't know what the screws are made of. I'd assume stainless, but I can't be positive.
If in doubt, buy some stainless ones at Home Depot to swap them out. All my Mags are
submerged and no issues at all.

filters of any kind (canister, bio balls, foam blocks, etc) are designed to
break down waste products into nitrates. you don't want this to occur in a
reef. if your doing a marine tank, it's ok to use filters.

my sump is a 20 gal rubbermaid tub. lots cheaper, and easier to obtain.

The reason I ask about the wavemaker is I would like to put two pumps
in opposite action instead of using SCWD device... If they make noise
when turned on, like Penguins do, I would order only one with SCWD.

Could you please check this for me if you have a chance?
Just observe how do they start when the power is set to on...
Maxijets start noiseless! I believe you have mag 5 and mag 7, right?
Could you test both? I would appreciate your help.

IME Mag drive pumps will shear the impeller shaft (its plastic) if switched
on and off constantly like on a wave maker. it breaks at the point it
enters the outer case where the rubber bushing is at. it doesn't stop the
pump, it just makes it very noisy and allows the impeller to wobble, and it
causes wear if not fixed.
