I have around 20 khuli loaches left which are dropping like flys,
losing at least 4 a day, a few of the other fish have also died, no
real symptoms.
water prams are N03 10 NO2 1 GH >16d KH 10d PH 7.6
They have a good air supply
any ideas?

1 ppm nitrite? There's part of your problem. How's the ammonia?

Way too high NO3 (ammonia) dude or dudette! You need it to be at or below
..25 according to my test kit. Do massive (although not total) water changes
every day until in that range I previously mentioned. Your nitrite (NO2) is
too high too as elaine mentioned below/previously! This is a clear cut case
of bad water quality. You might also try some amquel plus or maybe ammolock
to lower the ammonia levels temporarily. By the way - no offense- but are
you for real? Water quality information is available almost everywhere now a
days, have you tried asking your lfs or the web for this information yet? If
you are a beginner I can understand for the most part and am happy to help.
Good luck and later!

His/her ammonia levels are incredibly bad at 10 as I explained above (NO3 is
ammonia according to my test kit). It needs to be at .25 or lower according
to my test kit. His/her NO2 (nitrite) is bad too at 1, not as bad of a
mismatch as NO3 at 10 though. Good luck all and later, check what I said
above all if you haven't yet!

New tank or large increase in stocking? Nitrite should be zero. What's the
ammonia reading?
Start doing some water changes (50% a day) to get the nitrite under control.

Um, Daniel? NH3 or NH4+ is amonia. NO3 is relatively harmless nitrate.

Sorry about that. :-( I don't want to get into my being misled by something
often but let's just settle on my description of me having autistic-like
problems (really - I have a condition that has many similarities with
autism). Ultimately though I might just make mistakes like everyone else.
Please - I don't want to talk about me - it just reminds me of my problems -
thanks! Sorry again - especially to the original poster. So - to the
original poster - what is your ammonia reading? Later!

Hi, I dont have an amonia test kit, just an all in one tetratest kit
that gave the results I posted above.
So are the above conditions I listed okay? My other tanks give the same
readings but no fish have died! I should buy an amonia test kit? The
Khulis seem to die with wide open gills and some have tattered tails
now, I thought this might be from not feeding them for the past three
days? Fighting and such?
I am new to taking readings of my tanks

I just did a nitrate test from a seperate kit (figure the all in one
strips may not be great) anyway it came back as 5.0 ppm. It says on
the booklet to keep it under 40 ppm.
Maybe it is a disease?

Try and take a water sample to your local fish shop.
The main results to worry about just now are ammonia and nitrite (both
should be 0).
Nitrate is not likely to be causing this IMHO.

Hi, I did this the other day and the guy sold me some expensive filter
cultures and said dont feed them for four days, I did this but still
dying daily.
This is crazy, I just tested all my tanks nitrates and they all come
back as at least 10ppm, this includes a heavely planted tank and tanks
no fish have died in.
I then went and tested my RO water and this came back as 10 to 15 ppm,
tap water is the same.
How can I start off with zero nitrates with this water?
I will buy an amonia test kit!!

Could you be confusing nitrate and nitrite ?
Nitrate should be over 0 (shows the tank has cycled and the filter is
biological active)
Nitrite should be 0 unless the tank is cycling, there is a spike, or there
is something wrong in the tank
Ammonia should be 0

Hi, no, maybe my test kits are screwing up? For instance, I just tested
one of my tanks that all fish are healthy and well, the N03 IS 100, NO3
is nitrite correct?
I was under the impression nitrite wasnt deadly to fish?
can someone just confirm what leavel of nitrite, nitrate and PH is safe
for fish please?

Ammonia above zero is cause for alarm.
Nitrite TRITE above zero is cause for alarm.
Nitrate TRATE is fine up to about 40 or even higher, but steps must be
taken to gradually diminish nitrate content when it gets up higher than
40.

NitrAte (NO3-) is not very toxic at all. Try to keep it below 40 ppm or
so to avoid shocking your fish at water changes. The lower it is, the
better and many of us like it below 10 ppm. There are some fish like
rams or discus that are sensitive to nitrate.
NitrIte (NO2-) above 1.0 ppm can kill sensitive species(like loaches),
and above 2.0 ppm can kill most species.
Ammonia (NH3, NH4+) toxicity depends on pH. Toxic values (more or less)
are:
pH 7 or lower, 1 ppm is toxic
pH 7.5, 0.5 ppm is toxic
pH 8 or higher, 0.1 ppm is toxic
Please read the nitrogen cycle information in the FAQ.
http://faq.thekrib.com It will help you a lot.

And if you are cleaning your filters in ANYTHING but water from your
fishtank.
Please stop.
