Plant Question.

Ok my Inhareted tanks is now running better than when my dad had it over
5 yeas. wich to me is weird he was one an avid fish keeper. any way my
questions are this. some of my plants have a brown film on them especily
the leaves that are at the surface, what is this and is it a bad thing.
I think it is probably the oil/proteen layer. also upon examing the
gravel I have noticed it has a lot of old rotting stuff within it and if
you look closly you can see gas bubbles. I have plyed around in this
gravel befor to plant my plants and do remember some bubbles come frome
the gravel. No dead fish or bad water readings after the mini cycle that
happend when we moved the tank. Question is is the jungle I have in this
tank going to help get rid of this rotting mess(I think it might bought
4 plants that have ended up clipping about every 3-4 days nice green
except what I mentioned eraler.) or is this somthing I should worry about.

Hmmmmmm. Kinda hard to offer advice without more knowledge of the tank
parameters. So, fill in these blanks and we can speculate about what
is going to happen with your setup. k?

Tank size
Fish load
Filter variety
Light type/wattage
pH/temp/N03 level
Any regularly added chemicals?
Fertilizers used?
C02 added?

ok tank is a 10 gal. With 1 zebra daino, 3 glowlight tetrra, 2 clown
loach, plants unshure LFS called themcessiflora but can't find info.
temp is at 28c nitrite-0, ammon-0, nitrate-10, pH-7.2. have not used any
co2 or fertilizer. also I don't use an air stone.
the filter I use is just a sponge. I was using some carbon to get rig of
the ich treatment I was using a while ago.

Not sure how much light you have, might even be a light bulb?
(incandescent)

The brown stuff is probably an algae-like growth of diatoms. A fish
called ottos love to eat it. You could put a couple of ottos in there
for now. You'll have an overload situation when the clown loaches get
to be about 3 inches long though.

The plant growth you're going to see isn't going to be fantastic with
incandescent light and no C02. Sure, the plants will use some of the
gravel crud for nourishment, but not likely they'll clean it up any.
That is still up to you. Doing deep gravel cleaning once a week,
filling a 5 gallon bucket with brown gunk is your best bet to taming
the rotting mess. In fact, depending on the lights you have and type
of plants, they may die and add to the mess.

Not nearly enough for anything but anubias and MAYBE java fern.

Plus, it';s a power compact (unless there is a regular fluorescent at 13w
I don't know about) and those are 7" long. Assuming you have a standard
size tank, that 7" of light for 18" of tank.
