I was thinking some of us should put info about connecting
to rec.aquaria.marine.reefs on our web sites, to let more
people know about this.

I got started on just that. Here is what I got so far:

Hahaa! Well done, my laugh for the day :)
I can't say why I prefer newsgroups to forums, maybe because I'm on
dialup and newsgroups are faster. I don't have my fish on my website yet
'coz all I've got is a tank of live rock so far but your idea is great
and I hope a few do it.

Cheers

Hi Wayne,

For those of your readers whose ISP's have no Usenet capability there
is the option of reading groups via Google. Here's a link for your
website:

http://groups.google.com/intl/en/googlegroups/about.html

I use this myself because I didn't think to check before switching to
Netscape - My bad! Google access is no substitute for a full Usenet
feed but it does work reasonably well.

Newsily yours,

Alex

Yea it just isn't the same, but it is great for searching
old postings.

Google has gmail, and you can now use pop 3 with gmail.
Maybe google will eventualy let people connect via regular
newsgroup software one day.

No, Oz, but I've heard the dialup can be slow in SA as well. I think
it's quite expensive too, is that right?

I'm 7.9km from the exchange which is not ADSL enabled anyway so I will
never get ADSL or cable. ISDN leaves you with no phone line when the
power is out and we live out of town with no mobile phone reception so
that is not an option (we're on the end of a power line so have to be
able to let the power company know if the power is out here). Satellite
is above my budget right now - well, I guess I could do it if I wasn't
setting up a sal****er tank :)

SLOW!!!!!! Understatement of the year mate, truly terrible. I have adsl at
work and dial up at home. Dial up is cheap, about R75pm, adsl depending on
the size cap you want ranges from R350 up to about R800.

Netscape will let you read the newsgroup easily. I did that for years.
I'm using Mozilla's Thunderbird now.

I have ramr listed on my site as a source to commmunicate about the hobby.

I have a great search engine on my site. It is on the Hidden Treasure
page. But I'm going to have to move to a new hosting company, and they
won't have the same one unfortunately. Here's my engine:

Give up work - then you won't have anything to compare it to :)

Our dialup is a bit dearer (for unlimited access) depending on who you
chose but our ADSL is a lot cheaper than that I think. Sometimes I get a
good dialup connection sometimes I don't. I happen to be reading a novel
set in Africa at the moment written by an Aussie who lived there for 20
years or more. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and hope to travel there one day.

And so you should, it's beautiful over here, and the climate here in SA is
very similar to OZ. I live inland (Johannesburg) so if you're ever in the
neighborhood give me a shout :)
