I am doing a little research to see how it would be to care for a fw
stingray... I would like to get one, Ive got an empty 125 gallon tank
setting in my aquarium room and still dont know what to get... Can anyone
give me some good info on Freshwater Stingrays, like what is the easiest for
a beginner and the tankmates and water qualitys... and stuff like that. Ive
read that the Motoro Stingray is the easiest for the beginner... Any help
would be greatly appreciated... Oh and also some info on where to get them?
Thanks,
Mike

Freshwater Stingrays were a cover story for the September 05 issue of TFH.
http://www.tfhmagazine.com/default.aspx?pageid=1
The article noted that they grow big and fast, are messy carnivores with
stringent qater quality requirements, and need lots of room to swim. IIRC,
the author started his work with a pair of infant motoros in a 200 gal.
tank, and had to trade/sell/give away the critters to a colleague with a
1500 gal. indoor pond dedicated to rays, once they were full grown. Its
only one point for information, but the article left me with the impression
that a 125 wouldn't be big enough, even for a sole specimen. If your
research turns up something to the contrary, please share... Stingrays are
beautiful critters, and I wouldn't mind trying to raise some myself at some
point, if I could accomodate a tank which would suit their needs.

I believe I have changed my mind about the whole stingray thing... I found
some on the net for sale and they are a bit pricey and if I get one and me
being only a beginner on stingrays and it dies, than Im screwed.

I can understand that... Out of curiosity, what are we talking about, as
far as price?

Occasionally I'll see a freshwater ray in one of our LFS and $100 for a 6 in
a pretty good price for my region. I do know they need lots of swim space
which pretty much just means fine sand bottom (no rocks or decorations) and
will also grow quite large and quick.

Ick. Yeah, I'm not much for playing at the 'high stakes tables' in this
hobby, yet. For now, a $100 bet is a little bit too rich for my blood :-)

I remember those daze. Now I get my paycheck and go into the marine shop
here.
1 MH light tube and 1 bit of coral and I'm eating out of bins for the rest
of the week almost.
When it passes hobby stage and becomes lifestyle........
