Need links and suggestion on type of fish to stock a private pond. Size
is approximatly 125'x225'x4'. Does anyone know if this would be
considered approximaty a 1/2 acre? This pond is in central Oregon.

There are so many variables as to depth, climate, PH etc. Someone here may
be able to help, but the best bet is to call your local Dept. Of
Agriculture. They know your area and can put you in touch with those most
suited to help you, where you live. They would know which fish do best in
your area, the predators you can expect and other helpful information you
don't always find on the sites of those selling pond fish.
This NG is mainly populated by ornamental pond keepers. These are usually
pre-formed small ponds or slightly larger rubber lined back yard ponds.
What you have sounds more like a natural small lake. :-)

It would all depend on what fish are considered suitable for your
area. I would check with the department of fisheries and wildlife or
your local county extension agent as those folks have all the
pertinent data needed for such. Here in the south a pond as such would
normally be stocked with bass, bream, and catfish, or just
catfish........ and Talapia. The couty agent and fisheries department
can help yopu with giving your pond a going over and seeing whats its
parameters re, and suitability for what species of fish.......and
stocking levels as well. Unless you want an unbalanced affair, I would
seriously consider contacting those folks before putting any fish in
it.

You can keep just about any kind of hardy freshwater fish, with the
exception of river fish which might not cope with still waters. Some
fish you may not want to keep out of choice, pike will reduce diversity
by eating the others, lol, tench will stir things up a bit.
Ornamental fish... koi carp, shubunkins, golden orfes would thrive...
There is something magnificent about watching a bunch of splendid four
foot carp dawdle gently over and pose for a tasty tid bit...
Sport fish, well, there are allsorts. Check out pondboss.com for a pond
of that scale... Personally I like to see chummy big guys cruising for a
hand feeding, rather than hiding from a hook
Some will turn up from nowhere carried as fish spawn on the plumage of
passing ducks, geese...
