Common behaviour. I've got a tank with 5 platys and they congrgate in
the feeding corner any time we walk past the tank. If I raise the lid
they get downright excited to the point of splashing the surface.

I don't see that kind of behavior from the bottom feeders, though. But
they have to wait till their sinking wafers soften up to eat them.

This is our first tank. We have Black and Orange Mollys, tetras and 4 or 5
other species. My wife SWEARS that when she gets up in the morning and goes
to feed the fish, when she walks over to the tank the Molly's are at the
glass waiting for breakfast or they will come to the front of the tank like
they want to see whats going on whenever she walks towards it.

quite common. Mine do that, I sometimes think they would come through
the glass if they could.

goldfish are like that as well.

A lot of fish do this, as they associate you or your wife being at the glass
with food,

Fish are smarter than you think :)

Practical fish keeping ran a good artical this month on the basic 'whys and
what fors' of fish.
if you can get a copy it might be worth you having a read, its a great

My ember tetras do that as well. The cardinals do not, though.

This is a conditioned response.

Oscars go crazy when you approach the tank because they were reinforced by
food under that circumstance.

I used to have a betta that would beg for food. He'd stare at me and flare
and basically put on a fun show until I gave in and fed him.

Lots of fish do this, especially since my wife falls for it a lot.

The challenge can be to get them to NOT do that. I enjoy watching the
fish's natural behaviour, not the mindless 'feed me' darting across the
front glass, so I either have to be patience (let them forget you), or
sneaky (leave the room lights off and move slowly). I'm experimenting
with using auto-feeders, so the fish are much more blasé about my
activities, and then for special foods (frozen etc), I sneak up from the
back of the tank (so they don't associate feedings with me). Now their
interest in me is less conditioned and more .... thoughtful or curious
(which can be more interesting). However, this is just an experiment, as
hand feeding fish can be entertaining as well.

A friend back in grad school (long before I knew anything about aquaria) had
a big oscar that would flip water at him until fed.

Interestingly, my ember tetras only get excited about me coming up to
the tank during feeding time in the morning. When I walk up to the tank
at other times, they don't really care.

I, too, have had that experience! My oscar would invariably catch me
in the mornings, before I had enough coffee to remember to duck. He
splashed hard enough that the water would flip open the hood on the
left side of his 55 gallon tank and hit me when I was two feet from
the tank. Once, I got to the tank before he could splash, and I held
down the lid ... he promptly swam to the right side and splashed
*that* lid open and soaked me! I swear he was laughing all day over
that ...

I made the mistake of putting an Oscar tank in a dining room. He would
tap on the glass cover for table scraps (or whatever we would feed him)
whenever anyone was sitting down long enough.

My Mbunas frequently soak me at meal times....they would at other times
if I lifted the lid - pretty sure these guys equate the lid being lifted
with food or water change (which they think is a good game as well).
They also follow my ever move when I go near the tank..

The tank with the clowns, gouramis, neons, rainbows, guppies, platies
and Flying Foxes basically equate the lid and me with food - they are
great and hand feed but really I put it down to food- that being said
they do come and say "hello" from time to time. The 15 gall with the
Dwarf Gouramis, Bleeding Nose Tetras, Ram and Cories also only react to
food as do the gobies and cories in the hex....

The bettas in their 5 galls are in a class of their own....they come and
say hello any time I go near the tanks....I'm their flair buddy....

I think it is really down to the personalities/characteristics of the
fish in question....BIMO there is no greater sign of trust than my fish
eating from my hand... :-)

Did I tell you the one about this customer who said his fish reacted
differently every day. He fed his fish 7 different items (one for every
day of the week), and he swore that they would remember and know when it
was the day for their favourite foods (by their excitement level).
Personally I think the fish were just reading the label as he walked over
to the tank ;~).

An interesting aspect to this thread is that fish which can distinguish
faces and recognize their feeders will react very differently to people.
In the case of my Oscar, he would gently pry my fingers open to get at a
chunk of food hidden in my closed fist. If a room-mate attempted the
same thing, they would discover that Oscars have a good grip and teeth in
the back of their throat (he wasn't so gentle with them).

Sprial,

How do you keep your plants green like in the photo of your 55g?
Gorgeous!

I have a high output light source, add excel florish every day and
iron every week. Plants still have some brown spots on them.

Secondly, what is the name of the plant tht makes up most of your
tank? That particular plant usually turns brown after the new
sprouts are out for a while.

TIA

Hey Larry,

Aw, shucks..... <blush> Ya' know how to compliment a guy!

Seriously, the plants that seem to have taken over my tank, started as
a little-bitty one.... Large Leaf Ambulia is the common name. If you
like that, you ought to see my Rubin Sword now!!! Oh, the Amulia grows
extremely fast, good to detect nutrient problems.

The key to my success? Well I am still learning, but that was a growth
explosion just after the addition of my homemade hood (128W of T8s) and
DIY CO2. I use Sera tablets and Sera leaf fertilizer by the directions.
I use South Carolina red clay for my substrate, (against the advice of
some). So I don't have an iron problem :) YMMV - Good luck!
