Hi,

Iam waiting for my new 36 gal bow tank with pine stand. My first
thought is to transfer the fish from my old 10 gal tank. But the gold,
comets and fry are too small for the big tank. So I am thinking of
getting new fishes (good escuse to get more fish :) ). All the fish I
know are less than 2-3 inches long. And not much choice coming to mind
(also the local shops dont help much) outside the cold fresh water fish
than Goldfish, Comet or Koy. I dont want to go exotic types like
snakes eels etc. Can you please help to select some good varity also
hardy to cold? I want 6" or over sized fished that can grow to 1' or
over and tansfered to outdoor pond. Also good real plants, I already
have one from my 10 gal tank thats almost cover 1/4 the tank, I dont
know its name, but florish well in the regular light, air and feeding.
This will go in the living room. Iam in Zone 6a.

Appreciate any help

Sam.

## A tank can never be TOO LARGE. Put your goldfish in it and let them
enjoy! :-) I have four tiny 1" pearlscales in a 55 gallon tank.

All the fish I

## Koi get to 3' long and will not fit in a 36g tank after a few months.

I dont want to go exotic types like

## If you only want to keep them in the tank for a few months then koi would
be ok. But keep in mind they're heavy feeders and produce copious amounts
of feces.

Also good real plants, I already

## Koi will mostly likely eat or tear up any plants in a tank. I notice
they ignore hornwart and eelgrass (American Vals). Neither needs intense
light to flourish. Why not buy a heater and get some pretty tropicals?

Comets will get big. I have two in my 35 gallon outdoor pond. They
share the pond with some Japanese trapdoor snails. Crypts, Java
Fern/Moss are easy plants. Plus, pothos and peace lily are good for
sucking out nitrates as well -- leaves outside tank, roots in tank, of
course.

You are right a tank never can be too large. I added a 200watts heater,
12 Ghost Shrimps and 4 Guppy and 4 Oscars. Everything went fine untill
the second day found a guppy missing its fancy tail. So I moved all the
4 oscars to the 10gal tank and Iam looking for a 55 gal tank for the
coldwater fishes so that oscar can go to the 36gal tank.

Your pond and lillies pic are very pretty.

Hi Sam.
I'm a little confused by you rpost.
Are you saying that your Comets (and fry?) are too small for a 36
gallon tank?
How many Comets total are in your 10g tank?

==================================
I don't know who you're replying to but Oscars need in excess of 30g each.
They get huge and most often don't get along with each other. They eat
everything in the tank and rip out any plants you may have. Chain pet
stores will not take them back. What do you do with them then? These are
one fish that should be illegal to sell. Too many end up meeting a
miserable death or some fool turns them lose in the nearest river or lake.

I rearranged things, the Oscars (2albino and 2 common) 3x1.5"-1x2" each
are in the 10gal temp tank with a heater, air and filter. Doing a 20%
water change alternate days. Iam going to get a 55gal in few days for
them. I see the 2 albino oscars are paired, not fighting, but sometimes
the big one of the 2 albino charges the commons once in a while,
probably he is trying to showoff to the other albino.
I have 2 Goldfish fancytail, 2 Comets, 2 buble eye gold fancytail, 4
fancytail guppy and 1 feeder fish, and about 10 (-2?) ghost shrimps in
the 36gal tank with a 150watts heater, air and AquaClear Bio-filter.
Once the 10gal frees up, I will put the guppy and some plants there.

Sorry for my lackof knowlege in this subject which made me to think
that 1Gal/inch rule apply to all kind of fish.

Good thing youhaven't bought the 55g tank yet.
That would be pushing it with only 2 Oscars. You have 4.
I wouldn't try housing them all in a 75g,let alone a 55g.

Wow. a 36g tank is MUCH too small for all those Goldies.
Plus, you should be housing tropicals with Goldies anyway. However, the
Gups and Shrimps can live in the 10g fine ontheir own.
If you plan on keeping all those Goldies (I'm guessing you've never
seen these types fully grown, otherwise you'd understand my shock
here), you will need a tank just about as large as the one you will
need to buy for the Oscars.
Please, you really need to research *before* buying. However, you
already have all these fish without the size tanks that they will
require.
Your 4 fancy Goldies will grow to about 8-10" long, and their body mass
is HUGE,so they take up a lot of room.
The Comets get up to 16" long and need swimming space. Also, Goldies
live to 20+ yrs of age.
Might you want to rethink what you've purchased?
Where did you buy all of these fish at? I'm curious if they asked you
anything or said anything about them like how large they got, etc.

## Goldfish get quite large if healthy and well fed - and they grow FAST!
Each needs about 15 gallons of water as an adult and that's a minimum. You
will need a HUGE tank to house them or you'll be doing constant partial
water changes. They're heavy eaters and pass a lot of feces. Start with
at least a 100g tank if you want to keep them all.

## Go to Google and type in something like "goldfish care"........ :-)

Hi Koi-lo,

I was refering to the URL "http://bellsouthpwp.net/s/h/shastadaisy".
Which zone is this located? How does the fish survey the winter? Where
do u get all those liners, pool and net? Are they from Local Wal-mart
or LPS? How much they cost. Trying to figure out the cost for any
outdoor pond.

TIA

Yes, 1 inch of fish per gallon only works for a mix of smaller tropical
fish.

It's really the volume/ fatness/ weight of an individual fish that
determines its requirements w.r.t. water volume, surface area,
filtration etc. The fish's diet apparently makes a difference too, in
waste generated and required aquarium size.

I have a few goldfish, and they're under 1 inch per gallon but likely
overstocked in their 15 gallon aquariums.

* I'm in zone 6.

How does the fish survey the winter?

* They do fine outdoors. I seldom lose any over the winter.

Where
> do u get all those liners, pool and net?

* Mainly from local stores. If you want more info on something in particular
I can supply it.

Are they from Local Wal-mart
> or LPS?

* The "pools" and black dropcloths are from Wal*Mart. The mesh and netting
are from ACE Hardware. Water pumps are from Foster & Smith or That Fish
Place (mail-order). Filters are from a local store plus we make our own.

How much they cost. Trying to figure out the cost for any

* Anything from $12 for a basic 150g child's pool turned-small-pond from
Wally World to several hundred for a 2000g pond made with a heavy Tetra
rubber liner, pump and filter.
