View Full Version : 29g, possible to drill it?

I know I keep adding new facets to my plan, but all in hopes of doing it
right/better for the long run....
I'd like to drill out my 29 for an overflow, and I know I could do it
myself, just wondering where to get the drill bits for that large of an
opening, and secondly, what size??
I do understand that if this becomes too costly to DI"M", I'll have someone
do it... but who would do suck a thing, a glass replacement company?? no,
who else???
I'm thinking of taking a spare 10g for a sump, and a 20g for a Qtank... I'm
thinking ahead pretty good....

Most glass shops will offer to drill a tank for a fee, but won't guarantee
against breakage. :(
There are a number of way to try to DIY, but again there is risk and the cost of
the bits, etc. I know one guy used a Dremel with a diamond-tip bit. He said it
took a long time.

if you decide to home drill the tank you can do a number of things
the dimond dremel bits are about $1 each expect to take about 30 minutes to drill a 2"
hole, your only limited by the diameter of the bit (about 1/4") to the smallest hole, and
your time to the largest hole.
diamond glass hole saw bits run about $45 expect it to take 5 minutes to drill a 2" hole.
your hole saw will be a fixed size.
as for paying someone else, IME its cheaper to do it yourself. but practice on scrap glass
($4 @ homedepot) also buy the bulkhead adapter first and cut the hole to the apropreate
size

Will all these bits work for tempered glass too? I was under the
impression it would shatter.

nope you can NOT drill tempered glass. unless the ides is to have a zillion small pieces
of glass !

then the obvious question would be, other than it being labeled, tempered
glass, how can you tell whether it is or not???
I'm almost betting the bottom of this one is tempered... and if it is, I
suppose that ends that tanks chance... On to another tank then...

origionally it should have been labeled, you can often see waves in the glass if its
tempered, someone with experience in glass will be able to tell.

for a 29 its a 50/50 toss, however on a 29 I wouldnt drill the bottom even if its not
tempered, the sides are much more likely NOT tempered even if the bottom is. a 29 is a
small tank for tempered sides. and an overflow on the side/back takes up less room in the
tank.

I am not sure if possible you can cut a "Tempered Glass". But this a link
that may stear you to the right path (maybe).

They claim their "Diamond Drill" bit can cut any glass. You may want to
check with them. Free advice / consultation
