View Full Version : What does everyone have in their tanks????

Let's really start sharing here.....
We have seven tanks in our house....
2 5 gall tanks that house Boris and Bob (plus Platy buddy) the
Bettas....they live in the kitchen and flirt everytime I go near them to
wash up or make tea or coffee
I then have a 15 gall tank in the kitchen as well - probably takes up
too much workspace...this houses 2 blue dwarf gouramis, one dutch ram, 5
rummy nose tetras and 4 Juhlii cories....nice tank....
In the office space I have my 47.5UK gall malawi tank....full of killer
cichlids and lots and lots of fry...very interesting to watch the
different communities depending on their size (ie. adult, juvs or
fry)...I've two alpha fish in there that have made an imaginary divide
across the tank - when they stand off against eachother it is like there
is a magnetic force field between them....the others just watch their
backs (or tails) - from time to time someone gets bumped off, which I
really hate :-(
In the living room I have my 7.5UK gall hex tank. This houses 4 Peacock
gobies and 5 panda cories - used to be 5 gobies but I lost one :-( The
gobies are what I would describe as "chill fish". They have great
personalities and don't seem to care about anyone or anything else other
than one another - also are very fussy eaters - won't take flake at all
- the nearest they come to is nibbling on the catfish pellets I put in
for the Pandas....
Upstairs we have my son's 30 gall tank...very pretty...contains 6
Rasboras, 6 Glowlights, 2 Pearl Gouramis, 4 homebred Mollies and one
solitary Yoyo - he didn't start off on his own but there have been
various local issues with the quality of Yoyos...great tank and the
plants do wonderfully up there but we do have a green hair algae problem
- like scooping out green candyfloss - lol
In the Conservatory we have what I describe as my main community tank -
heavily planted - so very green. At the moment it is 47.5UK gall but is
going to be upgraded very soon - as I think I've probably got too many
fish in there - and also because I want to :-) this tank at the moment has:-
3 Blue 3 Spot Gouramis
3 small Boesmani rainbows
2 small red rainbows
3 flying foxes
5 clown loaches
1 queen arabesque plec
5 platys - was two but they did the platy thing :-) and boy did those
fry grow quick
Some neons, guppies and otos - not sure how many as the tank is to
heavily planted to find them all - I know how may went in but I'm not
sure they are still there (pretty sure two guppies have vanished)
So these are my current tanks....what are yours?????
Please all share - make this a big post

Wow! You have a lot of tanks and fish!
I have a 20 gallon tank
1 ghost shrimp
5 platys
3 pepper corys
4 ottos
I just got the plattys about two weeks ago and one of them looks pregnant
(fat belly and dark gravid spot), so I will probably have several more
plattys soon.
I would also like to add some plants whenever I can afford them.

You'll have loads of fish soon if you're right about the Platy :-)....if
she does give birth lots of plants and hiding places would be a good
idea if you want to raise the fry in your 20gall - when I first started
out with the tanks I bought a few fast growing plants (incidently they
were slightly cheaper than stuff like Java ferns, anubia etc) - I then
took cuttings from them, weighed them down with plant weights and stuck
them in the gravel again - now all the tanks apart from the Malawi tank
(which isn't planted) are a little bit like jungles....I've also donated
some of the cuttings to a friend - maybe you might know someone who can
give you some cuttings to try (make sure that you don't cross infect
your tank with anything from their's though - I use a mild bleach
solution before putting the plants in).
Good luck with the Platys

Well, I'm returning to the hobby after a bit of a break (like 40
years).
Just one tank here (for now). 50 US gallons, planted. Black painted
backdrop & black substrate. Some driftwood. 80w fluorescent lighting
on 12 hours a day. Now holding a steady 77 deg F.
Current occupants:
1 pair Red Dwarf Gouramis
5 Neon Tetras
5 Black Neons
3 Zebra Danios
4 Otos
2 Bronze Corys
1 Pepper Cory
Mostly a peaceful tank. Although the Danios can't help getting hyper
at times and the male Dwarf Gourami divides his time about equally
between building his bubble nest, foraging for food and
chasing/abusing his spouse.
Recently won a minor battle with Ich. (my fault, tried to get by with
a 100w heater & had a rapid drop in temperature this fall)
Algae is well under control, for now. I did have to zap a
cyanobacteria outbreak (that Maracyn works like greased lightning on
that stuff)
Trying to decide what to add next. Maybe some Marbled Hatchets (very
hard to find around here). An Angelfish or 3 would be nice too, but
I'm not keen on having the Neons 'vanish in the night'. We'll see,
it's all a lot of fun.
I think I'll ask Santa for a set of water test kits. It'll be the
second time I've asked him for a chemistry set, but it's been so many
years, I'm sure he's forgotten (grin).

OK I have one tank in the house that's all I'm allowed, so I have a 2m,
600L/170g tank.
Quite heavily planted with all the usual culprits amazon swords, etc.
Electronic CO2 cyclone injection using CO2 cylinders from a local bar
supplier. Twin canister filters filtering the water at about 750 g/h
The only things I'm think I need now is a water osomosiwhatsit, to bring my
hardness down to around 5 in the future when I go back to discus keeping,
and undergravel heating which will be installed in February, when the fish
will all get moved into a bin for a couple of days, when I completly re-vamp
the tank.
The inhabitants are;
5 Ottos
10 Clown loaches
1 Bristlenose Pleco
2 Gold Bristlenose Pleco
10 Rummy nosed tetra
4 African Glass Catfish - Parailia pellucida not the Kryptopterus
4 SAE's
2 Blue Ram
7 Leopard danios
5 Diamond tetras
10 Cardinals
2 Marble Angelfish
And the bane of my life 15 guppies, which the fry have no been brought under
control, by the introduction of my tank minders the Angels.
Next plan when we landscape the garden in a large pond and stream effect
running down past out house.

Currently in the kitchen:
One small former fridge box (the clear type) with 5 teeny goldfish fry, 3
snails (no doubt soon to be many) which came in on some plants from the
pond.
One small tank with 1 larger goldfish juvenile.
Living room:
Juwel Rio 400 litre with Cabomba, Java fern, Anubias, Hygropillia and Vallis
with 4 Clown loaches, 6 Angels, 4 large SAEs, 3 Chinese Weather Loach, about
7 Platy, 2 Bronze, 1 Albino, 1 Elegant, 1 Panda, 1 Stebai Corys .
and 2 Danios left out of 6 from two years ago.
Upstairs:
Juwel Rio 240 litre with plants as above and 6 Clown Loach (You can tell I
like them ), 6 Bronze corys, 5 Platy, 2 juvenile Angels, and 1 SAE.
Juwel Rekord 60 litre with Cabomba and Hornwort.
2 Bronze Corys, 9 Neons (was 10, 1 was DOA), 3 Platy (one rescued as fry
from our outside half barrel. Must have gone out on plants)
Two ponds with 2 Comets, 5 Shubunkin, 6 Tench, 4 Goldfish, and 2 Orfe.
I hate to say it, but I'd still like another tank as Gill has got me
interested in her Mbuna :-)

OK, I started back into the hobby in 1991, with a 90-gal community
aquarium and a home-made top with (currently) 5, 40-watt fluorescent
tubes. It now has eco-complete substrate, two large canister filters and
two heaters, bog wood and slate. It's in the basement recreation room,
and has giant Vallisneria, Anubias, Rotala, Cryptocornae, Ceratophyllum
and Java moss. The fish are: 3 clown loaches, 2 small pl*cos, 2 siamese
algae eaters, 2 blue gourami, 4 dwarf neon rainbowfish, 1 larger
rainbowfish, perhaps 18 white clouds and 12 zebra Danio.
This 90-gal aquarium has had blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) issues
since 1999. Around that time, I believe the city started to add
phosphate to the water to preserve pipes. I've tried all sorts of things
to get rid of this algae, without permanent success. Removing the algae
manually keeps the aquarium in fair shape, and I may try bottled water next.
I also have 2, 15-gallon aquariums that started out as quarantine tanks.
They're located in a metal stand one above the other in the dining room.
They're planted, and one contains 2 shubunkin goldfish. The other
contains one fantail goldfish.
Finally there's also a small plastic awquarium in the dining room. It
was bought for my daughter's small frog and later held a betta. For the
last year I've raised red ramshorn snails in this aquarium. My clown
loaches find the snails delicious :) when I need to reduce the snail
population. The small aquarium also contains Java moss, some Rotala and
aragonite substrate.
I find aquariums to be a pleasant hobby. I appreciate the aquatic
environments we create more than I appreciate the individual fish.
It's easy to get obsessive about the hobby, and this happened to me in
the first year after starting up again. At that time I purchased and
read many books, and fussed over the aquariums quite a bit. In more
recent years, the web sites and this newsgroup have become a good source
of information about the hobby.

Good morning all.. hope you don't mind a mostly lurker jumping in here!
First let me say I'm really jealous of some of your tanks.. the number of
them and the sizes! My dream tank is two custom wall tanks connected by a
glass tunnel running down the center of the room! ;-) I've always believed
in dreaming big!
I have two tanks: a 46 bow front that was given to me this winter. It came
with the complete set up including the fish.
I had a 70 gallon tank so I did some moving around of fish and buying some
new ones.
46 currently has:
gravel bottom, one of those store bought backgrounds and the decorations
that came with it. It has a HUGE pleco that creeps me out. I'm scared to
death of the thing!
2 cory cats.. fat and sassy they are...
2 redtail sharks
and one giant green severum, he's my baby. I got him about 10 years ago..
I'm not lying here!! I got him at Wal-Mart when they first opened up out
here. He was about the size of a quarter. He was very sick but I wasn't
experienced enough at that time to realize it and the little guy had some
kind of bacterial fungus and we had a heck of a time curing him. At one
point he was so sick he was almost dying. In desperation I put a teaspoon
of regular table salt in a large pot, filled it with water and threw the
fish in it... that was the starting point of his recovery. In all honesty I
think he has had so much medication that he is like a bionic fish. Over
the years I've had outbreaks of Ich and he's never gotten a thing. He
survived the move from hard well water to very soft city water without any
problems. He coaxes to be fed and is the most beautiful shade of blue I've
ever seen.
The 70 gallon tank I had wanted to convert to a salt water tank but I just
couldn't afford the skimmers and special pumps and filters... I had to go
with what I had so I changed it to a cichlid tank and I love them too. This
has a sand/gravel mix, some real and some artificial plants with caves and
ledges that I built from rocks and slate pieces that I've found over the
years in our travels.
There are no lfs here so I've been kind of winging it here and even though
I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out what some of the fish are as
they were sold as "assorted Africans" and the "expert" that "breeds"
cichlids and sells them to the store, who is also the store manager was no
help either. <shaking my head still over that one>
I do know that I have Labidochromis in variations of color and I think I
have some Melanochromis auratus. There is a total of 12 fish, I always
bought them in pairs as I was reestablishing this tank. The manager of the
store and I came to a fast understanding after I threatened to make a
complaint to his boss about having the wool pulled over my eyes, if I
purchase fish and they can't get along, I can return them for a store
credit. If I had it to do over, I found there is a very reliable breeder
about 20 miles from me and I would go to them to get my fish. But since
I've become somewhat attached to the ones I already have I am just learning
by trial and error right now. I did visit the breeder and they helped me
identify some of the fish I have and they spent some time going over some of
the basics such as them requiring a different diet than my other fish and
the importance of having hiding holes and such. After spending the
afternoon with these people I came home and took out all the decorations and
redid the set up. Since then I have very little fighting and I'm with this
tank almost all day most days. I stop and watch the fish alot as it's next
to my computer/craft set up and any time I look up the tank is there. Some
day I'll know all about these interesting fish, in the meantime I'm just
enjoying and learning a little at a time by reading these groups and several
sites on line.
Hope I didn't bore you all to death.

Great thread! I've very much enjoyed reading what everyone else has.
72 gallon bowfront
Eco Complete, Satellite lighting, Eheim canister w/ prefilter.
Bogwood, petrified wood, fake tree stump the CL's live in.
Heavily planted.
7 Clown Loaches
3 Corydoras Sterbai
6 female Platies
2 Zebra Danios
37 gallon Perfecto
2/3 Flourite, 1/3 Eco Complete, Satellite lighting + standard light fixture,
Eheim Canister/ prefilter.
1 Large chunk of bogwood to hide the prefilter and heater.
Heavily planted.
12 Neon Tetras
3 Corydoras Iforgotis
3 Dwarf Cichlids
2 Dwarf Blue Gouramis
35 gallon hex
1/2 Flourite, 1/2 small gravel, Satellite lighting, Eheim canister.
Large chunk of bogwood, small cave for the Plec to hide in.
Heavily planted/overgrown.
4 male Platies
3 White Clouds
3 Otocinclus
3 Corydoras Iforgotis
1 male Betta
1 Queen Arabesque Pleco
10 gallon
All stock equip that came with the tank, small gravel.
Somewhat planted, Q-tank.
5 Platy fry
There will be more tanks. We're planning on having a custom acrylic tank in
the 300-500 gallon range built by a local outfit that specializes in them.
It'll be a few years, I'm sure. We have room also for another couple tanks
in the 40 gallon range, which we'll add whenever we find a steal on the
equipment. We've also been toying with the idea of building an indoor Koi
pond.

Hmmm... lets see...
30 liter tank with a 4 cm layer of low-decayed peat as "sediment",
covered with a layer of oak leaves. Decoration is one piece of hollow
driftwood, javamoss, Azolla and duckweed. Circulation one 180L/h
internal filter, plus a weak airstone. pH in that one is about 5.5,
hardness very low.
Fish: 5 Danionella mirifica and 5 Otocinclus flexilis. (trying to
breed both).
90 liter tank with 5cm fine sand, covered with oak leaves. Entire tank
densely planted with Vallisneria "tiger", surface covered with Azolla
and Pistia. Circulation is one 450 L/h internal filter.
Fish: two eight-banded barbs (Eirmotus octozona, unfortunately two
males), about a dozen Microrasbora erythromicron (Crossbanded dwarf
danio), and about a dozen dwarf cardinals (Tanichthys micagemmae).
Also assorted snails and shrimp. The dwarf danios and dwarf cardinals
are breeding.
150 liter tank with 3" coral sand. Decoration: red granite. Filtration
1200L/h external filter. pH 8.3, hardness very high. Assorted fish, ie
platies, rasboras, highfin barbs (Oreichthys sp.), ricefish, a dozen
Danio choprae, and three Ancistrus. A very motley crew, basically
'fish soup', but it seems to work.

My humble aquariums are as follows:
1 15 gallon (usa) tank in my bedroom (right here):
1 male and 1 female fancy guppies
4 juveniles of such
5 kuhli loaches
A lot of pond snails
1 great amazon swordplant (standard)
Some hornwort (not doing so well)
Plenty of aeration (bubbles) 5 air outlets, 2 being tetra luft pumps,
one whisper, and 2 outlets from an airmaster, not to mention all
outputs go to airstones except for the sponge filter plus a full
compliment of check valves
I think 35 watts of fluorescent light (one 15 watt standard
fluorescent, and one 20 watt screw in self ballasted)
A new growth of algae (never had any in my tanks before (used to just
be some diatoms) on part of the amazon sword plant which seems to be
here because of the combination of too much plant food added and the
screw in light was too close to the tank/amazon sword plant)
Automatic feeder which always works properly ever since I elevated it
1 foot above the water's surface even with all of the bubbles popping
at the surface
I think it's a 150 watt ebo jager heater
Plenty of filtration (biowheel pro 60 and a fluval 104 canister
filter (separate))(1 sponge air operated filter)
Ever since adding salt to this tank the fancy guppies have thrived
(not too much salt mind you because of the plants and kuhli loaches)
Some plastic plants
Gravel substrate
55 gallon aquarium in the living room
2 silver dollars
Many dozens of fancy guppies
Tons of baby fry fancy guppies
A few leftover white cloud mountain minnows
A lot of java fern
Tons of hornwort
A lot of pond snails
Some plastic plants
80 watts of florescent light (shoplight)
Gravel substrate
Biowheel pro 60, hagen 301 powerhead with prefilter, and temporarily
a HOB filter with prefilter (actually a penguin but cold be any the
way I use it, sponge prefilter) for filtration
1 airstone (tetra deep water 8 air pump I think)
2 250 watt ebo jager heaters
Ever since adding salt the fancy guppies have thrived and the other
fish don't seem to mind the salt (same with the plants)
55 gallon in living room (filled to a height of about 4 inches)
aquarium (vivarium?)
1 fluval 404 canister filter connected in series to a biowheel pro
60
River rock gravel substrate
Tons of thriving fancy guppies
1 large piece of pacific northwest usa (oregon coast) driftwood
A lot of plastic plants for cover
A tupperware filled with dirt, island
Some slate rocks
A basking light
80 watt capacity shoplight with one repti-sun 5.0 40 watt tube/bulb,
and with one standard fluorescent 40 watt tube/bulb
2 250 watt ebo jager (submersible of course) heaters
Biowheel pro 60 is suspended via 2 u bolts on the tank's rim and
airline tubing so that the bottom of the biowheel pro 60's is about
1/2 to 1 inch above the surface of the water in the tank
3 musk stinkpot turtles (apparently very much nocturnal which
surprises me a little)
The turtles eat any snails I put in (pretty cool in my opinion -
escargot!)
I am protected by gfcis for all (one for my bedroom tank, one for the
two living room tanks) tanks, and that pretty much covers my setups,
I'd like more but don't have the funds for any experimental salt
water tanks or large tanks that would require floor reinforcement
plus the electrical costs, but other than that I unfortunately (just
kidding) have MTS!

=================
I have the same hornwart for 15 years. :-) It does best in slightly hard
alkaline water (shaded a bit from the sun outdoors. It's hardy). It can
grow as long as 8' in a 55 gallon tank and is excellent for baby fish to
hide in. I use Flourish with Iron once or twice a month. I also like
Jungle Pond Plant Saver. I use it in the 55s.

I tried to keep my hospital tank empty and then couldn't decide which
betta to buy - so got both - next question is where can I fit a hospital
tank when I go and buy another and what's to stop me filling it with
fish - oh dear....a little discipline required methinks...hey, ho - lets
try and stop LFS's having too many pretty bettas that will live quite
happily in 5 gal tanks....not happening - lol - and I love my bettas :-)

LOL.
I've often considered adding a Plec-a-whut-mus to the Tropical tank to help
with the Algae.
And I can definitely relate to the keeping me busy trying to figure out
what's going on.

I likely won't keep the Barbs in the office tank. I was going to replace
Junior with several Bettas (male and 2 or 3 females), but all the Bettas
looked sick when I was looking. The Barbs may end up in the Tropical tank or
in the hospital tank at some point.
There were 13 new additions to the fishy family today. I finally got around
to moving the Pond fish indoors today to the experimental indoor pond and I
found 13 new Fry. Although it looks like one won't make it; likely damaged
in the capture. There appear to have been three separate hatchings, based on
the various sizes. I had a lot more Hornwort in the Pond this year, so I
guess that explains the higher survival rate. Now if I could just get the
Pond smell off my hands. :)

A very good number, me too, I think :o), but I'm mostly living
vicariously through everyone's tanks as I went from 108 tanks (running a
store) down to 2 running. In my 66g, I have a tribe of 11 Monodactylus
argenteus (getting crowded in there), bristlenose and a trio of loaches
(1 Yoyo and 2 CLs). They are moving into a 120g which is under
construction. In a 40g, I placed 6 Julidochromis regani and rocks to the
surface along the back. I don't know how many I have now (seems like
hundreds ;~), and they are being moved into the 66g as soon as it is
vacated (or into the 120g if I take too long). Besides that I have
several empty tanks lying around, mostly smaller except for a couple of
60g in the garage needing a pane change.

Wow. All those tanks. Makes my tank skills seem weenie. We just have one
10 gal (37.85 liter) tank with some sort of sword plant, a java fern, 32
inches or so of water weed, some other leafy plant, a pirate decoration
and 5 black mollies. We're planning on adding a betta next week.
This tank all started when someone said, "Go ahead, little 2 year old
boy. Throw the ping pong ball at the cups." Got a coupon for a feeder
goldfish (that's probably a subject that can ignite as many flames as
the trolling). Feeder got ich. Converted it to tropical with the
addition of a heater. Cleaned it out and did a fishless cycle, and now
we have happy fish.

lol, we all start somewhere. I have to confess that I've never
personally owned a goldfish, and my first fish was (I think), a
Pumpkinseed sunfish, kept in the garage on the floor.
I think as the hobby progresses, you can go through stages of many tanks,
many fish, big tanks, many plants...but it all settles down somewhere in
the niche which brings you the most pleasure, and sometimes, that's a 10g
with a live plants, a Betta and some tank-mates, so don't be too
surprised if you come full circle some day ;~).

First signs of my addiction where as a child trying to win as many
goldfish as I could - used to drive my mum nuts as she tried to find
places to put them - we only had one tank and a bowl at the time :-)
Although I'm glad that this practice has stopped (at least in the UK) it
did get me started....although we've been through tank free times I
think adding up the years I have had fish for more time than not...

I did have another 10 gallon tank about 20 years ago. I think it was
probably way overstocked with a bunch of neon tetras, zebra danios and a
couple of platys. I remember I got a pregnant platy and a breeding tank.
A short time after she birthed, we went on vacation for a week, and I
hoped the fry were big enough to not be eaten.
I was wrong. I think the rest of them died out due to new tank syndrome.
Back then, we didn't know to cycle the tank. Poor fish.
I've got plans for an 80 gallon tank (~300 liters), but the boss won't
let me get it for a while...

Always set up your first tank the way your SO wants it (this includes the
coloured gravel, treasure chest, pirate skull and whatever else it
takes). Then perform all the maintenance on it (now they owe you).
After that you are home-free. You should be good for 6 more tanks, just
the way you like them (but don't buy them all at once ;~).

This is so, so true - very sage advice here :-)
My SO helped with my son's 15 gall (which I now have in the kitchen as
he upgraded to 30 gall) and with our first tank which is the 47.5 gall
in the Conservatory. Fortunately his taste wasn't garish and matches
mine. He also had input into the fish that went in originally - he has a
passion for Neons so providing I maintain a school of neons I pretty
much get away with. Now I can do pretty much what I want tankwise but do
involve him the decision making on the larger scale projects that will
impact him (for example my planned tank upgrade). Probably how I got up
to 7 - now he just rolls his eyes and goes back to whatever he is doing.
Of course, another sacrifice is to allow SO a free rein with their pet
projects. My SO is into home automation (when he's not working flat out
on the business) - I think I only have 3 real light switches in the
house. If he even starts to murmer about the fish I just swear about the
lights - lol or mention the number of pcs knocking about the place -
works a treat

Three tanks.
Tank #1: 10 Gallon Tropical. Two adult platies and two babies. The
second of whom has been hiding so effectively that I didn't know it
was there until tonight.
Tank #2: 30 Gallon Goldfish: Two adult fantails. One red, one
silver/black. Both moochy.
Tank #3: Quarantine tank: Two young oto algae eaters. In about five
days they will be officially moved to the tropical tank to join the
platies.

Most of the time they hide and sleep in a pile under a shelf in the tank,
until food is on offer and then it's a clicking cacophony.
