hello, my son just got a goldfish in a carnival. We do not have a fish
tank. What is the best way to keep the fish alive as long as possible?
Thanks, Carla

Honestly, you should donate it to a pet store.

You should alternately acquire the equipment to care for a living
creature properly.

Lastly, if you insist on keeping the fish without the aforementioned
equipment, you may try the following;

1: Get the largest container you have. Glass or plastic. Do not use a
container that has EVER EVER been used for anything but human food or
drink. Wash it well in warm water, NO SOAP. To fill the container,
use water that has been treated with a dechlorinator from a fish
store. If you cannot acquire this, allow tap water to sit for 8-12
hours in the house to dissipate the chlorine and reach room
temperature. Using water right from the tap will likely kill the poor
creature. Fill the container with the treated or aged water, and
float the bag the fish is probably in, in the container for about 30
minutes. Every 5 min or so, add a small amount of the container water
to the bag. After the 30 min, scoop out the fish and put him in the
container.
Every day, siphon off 50% of the water, and replace it with water
treated or aged as above. The container should be somewhere where the
fish gets some light.

I do not approve of the 3rd option. It will not work long-term. The
water is not being heated or filtered properly, and the fish will be
living in his own waste. Please consider giving him up for
'adoption'.

Please do not think of this as insulting or degrading. I just feel
very strongly about caring for our finned friends as well as we can.
I am almost literally brought to tears when creatures die due to my
own errors in fishkeeping.

If you wanna go cheap, but keep the fish.....Most discount stores sell
some very inexpensive, China made, kits. They are nothing special but
should be sufficient for the task at hand. Also, a 10 gallon glass tank
is around $8 on sale, while a Whisper 10 filter is about $10-$11 on
sale.

As a note, most municipal water companies use chloramines now, which do
not evaporate and must be neutralized.

When I was a child, I won a goldfish. My dad had an old glass
2-gallon fishbowl. I put the fish in the bowl (as others have said,
you must use chlorine drops) with a couple of sprigs of a common
floating plant called Anacharis. I put the bowl in indirect sun so
the plant could live. Once a week, I netted the fish and put him in
a glass. Then I emptied out the bowl, and scrubbed any algae off
the glass with a scrub pad that never saw soap or cleansers. I refilled
the bowl with fresh water, using chlorine drops, and put the fish
back in his home.

The fish lived for about two years before his unfortunate demise.
You must feed the fish very lightly in this sort of setup, or he will
outgrow his home even faster. The sprigs of plant (and light for it) are
VERY important as they use up the fish waste and oxygenate
the water. Your other option is a cheap 10g tank which can serve as
a more suitable long-term home for your new pet.

No disrespect intended, I was 'speaking' to the troll who made the
post. I suppose I'm spoiled. The USENET groups I frequent have been
blessedly free of such asinine behavior.
