View Full Version : Mushrooms taking over! Help!

Hello everyone,

Over the past few months, my mushroom rock has exploded and the tank is now
swarming with mushrooms. The other polyps seem to be disappearing. Can
anyone explain why the mushrooms have suddenly taken over?

A few months ago there was a power outage and my electronic timer did not
turn on the CF lighting (about a week max). I reset the timer a few days
after returning from a business trip. Other than the temporary lighting
problem, the tank gets regular water changes (10%/week) and has maintained
the same dosing and feeding schedule that has been in place for two years
now (no major changes).

Your insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mushrooms can spread like crazy. I have taken a razor blade and
scraped them off of rocks to get rid of them, only to have themappear
again a month or so later. You need to start removing them or they
will take over your entire tank and start killing off other corals

Mushrooms are not hard to controle, just rip off the extra
ones off of the rock. They are not indistructable like
aiptasia, but they are tuff. I like using a hemostat for
this. Hemostats are handy in the reef tank.

Hemostats have been indispensable in my reef experience and maintenance
practices.

Hello Wayne,

What is a hemostat ?

It's a surgical tool, like a long long needle nose pliers,
stainless steal. It comes in real handy for geting in
between the coral.

"Forceps" might sound more familiar to you fishnut. That's what we
called them here in Oz when I worked in theatre. The ones we used
clipped shut and are easily undone again one handed.
