View Full Version : Yoyo's

Yes i'm talking about the loach not the toy :), My Yoyo's are a
interesting fish, they have almost doubled in size since I got them on
friday. They just don't stop looking for food and oviosly getting it.
They get FAT every night and I meen big buldging belly. I don't think
I'm overfeeding I give them some sinking shrimp pellets every 2-3 days
and flake 2x a day for other fish, The flake I put just enoughf that the
fish eat and a little bit falls to the ground. The tank is fairly new
>2mo. So their is not much crud under the gravel. I do have snails so
maybe they are just getting fat of snail eggs, as I have not noticed any
empty shells like I do in the clown loaches tank.
Another topic of consern os my banded rainbow he is in the same tank. he
has a fungus on his fins, he had it before and it went away before I
could get some meds but now that I added the loaches he has it again. I
don't have a spare tank for a hospital. All other fish seem fine he is
also 7-10y old. He also tends to ram the glass and filter intake after
he flashes around the intake. Is it just age getting to him, if so
should I uthinize him? From my reserch there is no way to prevent the
fungus as it travels in the air then into the water. If he is old and
low amune system he will probably keep getting fuzzy-clear-fuzzy, or am
I way off my rocker ;p
TIA, for your help great NG except for that troll bull**** that went on
here.

I don't see a lot of talk here about vacuuming gravel to keep crud down and
partial water changes. Have you tried that? When I vac the gravel I allow
the dirty water to collect in a bucket and use it to water my houseplants.
Clean fresh dechlorinated water is put in the tank. There is nothing quite
like a 15 to 20% water change to remove dissolved "nasties" from your tank.
Once I started doing that years ago (and quarantining new fish) fungus and
bacterial infections became a thing of the past as did yellowish water.

well no offence DUH!!, how much extensive vacuming do you have to do on
a 2 month old tank, most of the crap I probably have is what caused my
cycle to happen(usualy about 6 weeks if i'm correct it took me about 5
but thats splitting hairs IMO). I'm asking if young yoyo's genualy are
glutons and if my old rainbow is relly old and not bother helping or is
he still good to go mind you he has cycled 3 tanks in his 7-10 years. I
do about 20% waterchange every week on fridays usally about 13:00 trim
plants, etc. my other tank I don't vacume the gravel the sanils do that
and the plants take their old homes with root mass plants follow snail
caves(deep gravel movement) also my Clown loaces in said tank do top
level gravel movement. although I do notice the ocainal bubble come from
the gravel usally with a snail attached, this is an old tank setup got
it from my dad who used to keep may fish. usualy without many problems.

$$ No intensive vacuuming. After a few weeks mulm will collect. That's
what's removed along with the water it takes do it. It will not effect your
cycling. Some people don't even use gravel in their tanks but depend on a
filter only.

Justice,
Sorry to email you directly, but I don't want to draw any more attention
to trolls on the NG. As long as you respond to Carol aka Koi-Lo,
Carol-Ann, Reel McKoi, or any of her other nyms, you are continuing to
feed the trolls and there is likely to be more bull****. There are some
very destructive folks that "Carol" has angered, accused of rape, and
continues to taunt, mostly in alt.religion.jehovas-witnesses.
BTW, you absolutely don't have to take my word for it. Google Groups
archives older postings so you can check things out yourself. Look for
the person posting in a.r.jw as Cracklin, Cracklin Rosie, or CR and form
your own opinion about this person. Also look at rec.ponds about three
months ago to see how destructive the trolls can be. They watch Carol
and troll the newsgroups where she hangs out.
HTH. I love this NG too, and want ALL the trolls, including Carol, gone.

Thread drift, to Elaine:
I saw in another thread someone mentioned that you recommended salt
for lifebearers. true?
And if so, why? something I have been trying to track down is the
reason for the salt. Osmotic pressure, I'd presume.
My tap water runs anywhere from 600 to 1050 ppm tds, and I wonder what
salt would add to that, in terms of fish health. I'm speaking of
nominally healthy fish, at the nursery we went to 0.3% salt for
paracites and seemed to have good results. Really probably 0.2% salt,
0>1% native minerals in the water, measured with a conductivity meter
scalled to read TDS.

I've read from a number of sources that live bearers, especially some
mollies, benefit from salt in the water. A lot of mollies are really
brackish fish which is one of the reasons that I've seen them suggested
as fish to cycle marine tanks. I seem to remember NetMax in a recent
post discussing the way that most live bearers are farmed - high temps
and high salinity - so that their move to our freshwater (salt free)
ultimately is not good for them and shortens their lives. He also
suggested - although I can't find the post right now down to the number
of interesting fishy threads we have going at the moment :-) - that in
fact the offspring of our live bearers do far better than the parents
and that when looking at these great fish we should really be looking at
the healthiest ones being those born into our tanks....my experience to
date has born this out and I currently have 4 home grown mollies that
have already exceeded the life expectancy of their parents - long since
gone....same with Platys that are home grown....

Aw, dang it! Different newsreading software 'cause I'm at work. *heavy

True. If your water isn't very hard and/or your livebearers are failing
to thrive, salt can be very helpful. NetMax wrote a great post a few
weeks ago about putting livebearers in salt when he was running his
store. For planted tanks or tanks with salt-sensitive fish, I use 1
tsp/5 gallons. If you've got more salt-tolerant fish, 1 tsp/gallon
works really well. Use salt without an anticaking agent like aquarium
salt, sea salt, or pickling salt. Some Kosher salts are OK too - check
the label.

I think people use salt because these fish come from water that's often
slightly brackish. I've kept and bred guppies without salt in the water.
They did fine. The water was hard and alkaline, but not brackish.
