View Full Version : High levels of Alk and Ca.

Several weeks ago I purchased two new test kits for these properties. The
process of testing was new to me and subsequently I interpreted the results
on both tests wrong. (Basically it boiled down to, was the more titrant i
put in the higher the results should be. I.e. I took final reading times 500
for the results to calcium. I didnt take (1-final reading )times 500 )

So after several weeks of overdosing on a two part B-Ionic and finally
reading the results correctly LOL, I have driven the calcium above 500 ppm
(you can see the start of CaCO3 forming on the glass) and the KH is 19.2 dKH
/ Alk = 6.9

Other than cleaning the CaCO3 off the glass, is there a problem I should be
aware of?

Also, how long till i might see the levels in normal ranges, with or without
doing anything?

Rick, by not dosing at all for the next week or more, all your Alk and Ca levels
will drop slowly back to within normal parameters.

I hope you have figured out how to test correctly, so you'll have a good idea
where your parameters are.

if you feel the must to lower the alk/ca levels a waterchange will do it, but as Marc said
leave it alone itll fix itself over time.

now is the time to get to know your test kits, a good LFS (if you can find one) will allow
you to test your water in front of them, and they can compare results with their test kits
or at least your readings, and help you to understand what its saying.

Rick, it is not that bad, as Marc said just leave it alone it will come down on its own
