Inherited a "Red Sea Berlin Classic" skimmer with reef tank and from what we've read, starting to understand that these are not very good skimmers.
Planning on an upgrade ASAP and am looking at these two for a 125 gallon system. Completely new at this and any recommendations on these two or maybe another brand/model that we're not aware with would be appreciated.
TIA

I use the EV120 with the recommended mag5 pump and I am not all that
thrilled with the performance. I have an older skimmer (dont even know
the name anymore) on a 85 gal with only a few corals, 2 small clowns
and the niormal clean up crew. That unknown skimmer pulls more older
skimmer pulls more gunk out then the EV120 does on my fully stocked
show tank.
IMO the EV120 needs to be constantly cleaned (like every 2 days) to
work properly. As soon as there is any kind of built up in the neck it
slows way down in pulling stuff out.

I've never run a Euro-Reef, but I've had my EV-180 on my lightly stocked 72gal for about 2 years. With the recommended mag7, most of the skimmate coated the inside of the riser tube and very little got pushed into the cup. So I upgraded to a mag9.5 and now I can open the air valve and fill the cup in about 3 seconds or close it and skim very dry. It is very sensitive to this adjustment, but I have it tuned to fill the cup up to the drain in about 24 hrs. It overflows into a container, but I normally empty it and wipe off the inside daily. Anyway, I would recommend an EV, but with slightly more pump than recommended by AquaC.

That is the same thing I'm seeing with my 120. Im going to see if
using a mag 7 will make a difference. Thanks for the info.

I would suggest going with the needle wheel skimmer myself, but you
should also look at the ASM G3 skimmer, it normally costs less than the
6-2, is easier to work with but is basicly the same skimmer, other than
changes in the way it is built.
