View Full Version : Thanksgiving Holiday?

Freud

Hi:
I have 6 Harlequin Rasboras in my tank at work. I never feed them over
the weekends and they're doing fine. My question is, should I buy some
sort of feeder tablet for the Thanksgiving holiday? I'm going to be away
for 4 days and I don't want them to starve. On the other hand, I've
heard mixed reports of the vacation feeding products. Any advice would
be appreciated.
Thanks,
Freud

I use the auto feeder that tuns on batteries I got from PetSmart. It
woked fine for me in the past up to a month away from my fish. It cost
about $12. You can put almost any dry food in there. I mix few kinds
of dry food in there so they can have a balanced diet.

Others here have written previously that what you propose is easily
doable (i.e. you can leave your fish for 4 days without a feeder),
and from others' experience those dissolving food blocks are not
worth it except in emergencies. Good luck and later!

I've left any assortment of fish for long weekends without a problem.

I have left my fish for over a week using Tetra Vacation Sticks. The
pyrimidal type blocks are worthless, IMO.

Please don't use those vacation feeder blocks....ever!
4 days without feeding isn't going to kill or starve your fish to
death.
Do a regular water change a couple days before leaving. Feed normally.
Don't add extra food thinking it will keep them a little longer, as
you'll end up polluting your tank.
Those feeder blocks are nothing more than a little cheapo food bits in
plaster!
Do you want to put plaster into your tank? Of course not and neither do
your fish. = )
It actually screws up the water chemistry as well, so they're never a
good idea, emergency or not.
When leaving for more than 4 days (4 days is my personal limit) I
either have a family member come to feed every couple of days (I dish
out the daily amounts into ziplock baggies so that there are NO
mistakes, no over feeding because they looked hungry, etc).
If you cannot get a fish sitter, then an automatic feeder can be
purchased.
They used to be on the costly side not too many years ago, but not
anymore.
I was quite surprised at how cheap they are now.
Just make sure it's a reputable brand. A mess up with one of those can
be a death sentence if it goes crazy.

I have never stopped feeding for more than 2 days, however, our school
tax collector had a large "river tank" left by one of teachers that
had a large vine growing in and above it with 2 small fish. In the 2
months she had the tank in her office she never fed them. I gave her
some food, but the following year the tank was gone.

I worry about what will happen if I need to be away so am interested
in the replies.

I only ever used a feeder tablet once - never again - came home to a
tank of dead goldfish :-( I understand that auto-feeders are better but
never tried one (yet).

From my experience if you are leaving your fish make sure that the
water quality is good, do a water change and check that all mechanical
kit is working - I lost a large number of fish when on holiday because
the pump stopped working :-(

Thanks for the replies - I think I'll go ahead & just leave them,
certainly they have no problem with a regular weekend and I've read that
more fish are killed by too much food than by too little!

Please let us know how that works out. It would make me feel better
knowing that I can leave my fish for several days rather than trusting
a person unfamiliar with fish care coming in.

Got back to work this morning & they're all happy & doing fine - they
did seem quite voracious when I fed them, but that's about it. Now I
need to do my Friday water change...

Great to know, 4 days without food.

I too left for 2 days, strangely, when I got home, the auto switch had
the lights on, but my fish did not "rise to the bait." They seemed
sleepy, however the next morning all was back to the normal feeding
frenzy. Maybe they were sulking! <g>
