View Full Version : eek - it's not ich it's velvet....

Although my Clowns certainly did have Ich they now (those that I can
find) have definitely got Velvet - one poor chap is starting to lose his
skin - of the others only one is accounted for (died last night - :-( )
- I have no idea where the other 3 are hiding out...Also explains why it
never totally cleared up - the stress factor was the Velvet...poor, poor
fish :-(

I'm pretty sure that there is nothing that I can do for the Clown that I
saw this morning and will have to look at euthanising him if there is no
other option - as for the others I can't even find them let alone assess
their health....

Now, I'm pretty worried about the rest of my fish (Neon gone this
morning but that could be coincidence) - I'm off to the LFS to see what
I can do (Protozin should also have treated the velvet). I've checked
them all and can see no signs of any spots/powder or anything but I
don't think I can leave it to chance.

If anyone has any suggestions on this I would really appreciate it. I've
done some googling and some of the stuff is pretty confusing - one says
turn the light off and somewhere else it says keep them on....Copper
appears to be the most common suggestion for treatment but I'm a little
worried that this might be a kill or cure option. Bear in mind we don't
have the meds available to us in the UK that a lot of you have in the
States....

Thank guys...it was too late unfortunately for my Clowns....three are
already dead and two are missing and I fear they have met the same fate
as their companions....I'm working on ensuring the rest of my fish don't
go down with Velvet and attempting to find/retrieve the other two clowns...

I'm very sad....I love Clown Loaches....obviously the combination of
both Velvet and Ich was too much for them.... :-(

I'm sorry to hear this. Finding healthy looking clowns in my area isn't
easy, so I hesitate to buy any. Those I saw recently were very thin, small
and pale colored. It's discouraging.........

Gill, I've only had to battle ich one time and it was not a pretty
sight. Like most battles, there were deaths. What I did notice was
the scaleless fish, clowns and I think a rainbow shark, all died from
the cure. They lost there skin from the harshness of the medication.
Now, I'm not saying that the skin loss wasn't velvet, but I think the
condition, be it velvet or not, is directly caused by the meds.

So really it's a no win situation. If you don't medicate they die and if
you do medicate they die.... :-(

I think the lesson I've learnt here is not to buy the more delicate type
of fish from a new source (I'm classing Clowns as delicate because of
the issues have had with Ich/Velvet)...If/when I get more Clowns it will
be from one of my known/trused suppliers...

And quarantine them for 21 days. It's a lot easier spotting and treating a
disease in a 5 or 10 gallon thank than a planted and decorated display tank.

Bringing home new fish and putting them straight into your established
aquarium is playing Russian Roulette......
