Hi -

I live in Louisiana, and I was helping with hurricane clean up when I
found an abandoned goldfish. The owner left the fish OUTSIDE in a 50
or so gallon aquarium. The water was thick, green and cold, and the
poor little fish was barely moving. I couldn't leave him/her (I have
no idea!), so I bought an aquarium, took some of the water, and brought
him/her home with me.

I went to the pet store and the clerk advised me to get a filtration
system and some drops to purify the water. Since there was only about
1/4 of the tank full of water, she told me to fill up the tank. Two
hours later, the little guy is lively and swimming all over the tank,
ate some pellets, and seems to be doing much better, but the water is
still green.

So...I know nothing about goldfish. What do I do about the water? What
do I need to put in the tank for the fish to be happy? Right now, it's
just the fish, the filter, and water.

Thanks for any advice.

Laci

I would gradually replace the old water with
fresh, making sure to first treat the water for
chlorine (or chloramines, depending on what's
in your tap water). Fish can get used to
less than optimal conditions; moving them
abruptly to optimal water conditions can be
as much of a problem as leaving them in
the old water.

You've made a good start. Goldfish don't
really need anything fancy, just large enough
to give them room to grow. How big is
the tank the goldfish is in now?

There are a bunch of beginner goldfish guides
on the Internet. Here's one that I found that
looks reasonable:

Good luck, and good on you for rescuing
a fish in need! :)
