Returning newbie

I have a 75 gallon tank I want to set up as a reef tank. I plan on
putting it in our family room.

I got the tank for free along with a rusty stand and some other parts,
most in poor shape. I know I need to get a different stand, cover and
lighting. I also need to get a skimmer, heater, and all the other
goodies.

I'm not a total newbie because I had a reef tank for a few years but
gave it up after moving. It's been about 6 years and I don't know what
the latest recommendations are. Are M halides the proper lights to
use?

I'm also wondering whether to bo for a bowed front aquarium instead.

All suggestions are appreciated!

MH lights rule.

Bow front tanks look great at a glance, but I would not
want one for my regular viewing pleasure.

Depending on what your intentions are of keeping MH are not necessary.
A very large selecton of corals will do just fine under HO florexcent
lightsThere are propbbaly more tanks without MH than there are with
them. If its fish only then NO flor. are more than suitable.

I have few bow fronts and wave front tanks, and IMNSHO, they suck.
They distort whats inside very b adly when viewed form different
angles,and will play tricks on your vison even when viewed from the
front . Look in from the side or a corner and see two or three of a
fish you only have one of........Only reason I got any of them is the
price was right or they were free and they held water.....A standard
tank is by far the best especially if one is going to be watching the
inhabitants to any extent.

I'm planning on a reef tank. Are there recommended pre-made hoods with
MH lights in them? Also, any recommendations on stands?

My personal preference is the reefsun at
www.hamiltontechnology.com

And by hanging them above the tank, it makes maintenance
on the tank so much easyer, than hoods. If I wanted some
kind of top, I would build a cabinet style top with the MH
light haning in it.

When I am setting up a reef tank for myself, if the tank,
won't fit 400w mh lighing, it's the wrong size tank for me.

I have a wooden canopy on top of my 55 gallon tank, to keep the cat
out. I bought it at a local pets store, along with a matching stand.

You could probably order it online as well, though the shipping costs
might be prohibitive ....

I got the living sh*t disciplined out of me when I was a kid, and STILL got
into things I wasn't supposed to....what IS it with kids, anyway??
