OT freshwater question

[Matthew Heath]

Today I noticed what looks to be a case of popeye in my Albino Oscar. What
is the best cure? I've done a 20 % water change. I've looked around the
net but thought I'd ask some people with experience. :-)

I've had two cases of popeye, both or dwarf species apisto, and both times,
all fish in the tank become ill, and passed... seperate, erythromyacic,
tetracycline, and marocyn(sp) were used, and nothing happened... Someone
once told me that Clout would work... I've never had to use it....

In the tank is a Jack Dempsey, 2 Tiger Oscars and an Albino. So far only
the albino seems to be affected. I picked up some marocyn today and hope
that works.

In Fancy Goldfish circles super clean water (meaning very frequent changes)
and an increase in vitamin c rich fresh foods are the treatment of choice
for popeye.

Poor water condition normally the cause of the problem. Reason are due to
bacteria infection.

water condition is good as far as I can tell. doing water changes about
once a month. Only other problem with the tank is white "bugs" that are on
the glass and occasionaly the fish themselves. This has been a problem
since before I got the tank. I have taken water samples to two stores and
neither could ID the problem. A few months ago I took the fish to a new
tank clean everything in the tank. I even boiled the rocks and gravel.
When I set the tank back up the "bugs" were gone for about a month then came
back as strong as ever. I don't know if they could've caused the popeye or
not, but they aren't nearly as bad now as they have been. I have a few pics
of the fish. I will look and see if any of them show what I am talking
about.

If you have planaria (your white bugs) that is an indication of poor water
quality as well.
Don't mean to nag but Oscars are notoriously huge waste producers- much like
my Goldfish in that respect.
Once a month water changes just don't cut it with these poop machines.

I'd say you probably overfeed as well- the big "personality" type fish just
bring out the worst in their keepers <g> with the way they beg for food.
I do the same thing with my Goldies- I just change water 30% once a week to
compensate- and overfilter as well.

Hate to piggyback myself but when did you last run a NO4 test?

Someone suggested planeria once, but it doesn't appear to be that. These
are more like white dots than worms.
