View Full Version : Brass fittings

Just reposting the following in this forum, as no definite answer in "ponds".
We have a small pond with 2 reasonable sized goldfish which has been established for some time. The pond itself is fibreglass I think with a waterfall feature using two fibreglass trays.
I would like to add to the waterfall feature by using a large brass or more probably bronze tap, which is about 5 times larger than a common garden water tap. By directing the pump water through the tap and cracking it open will give the appearance of a tap dripping water into the existing trays.
My question is...will anything from the brass/bronze (eg copper, zinc or tin) affect the fish?
Thanks for any help,
Rod

$$ They used to use brass on air valves for fishtanks but have switched to
plastic. You can call the Fish and Wildlife Service or the Dept. of
Agriculture if you can't get the information online. They will know who you
can call for the correct answer.

$$ I would avoid all metals except stainless steel until you get a definite
reply from someone who knows.

Will not hurt a thing.....Cool and cold water does not present as much
of a problem with leaching of any metals. Same thing with your typical
older copper pipe plumbing and lead solder. It was only a concern with
the lead in the hot water line connections, as it caused it to leach
out........not a problem with cold water and fish.Brass and bronze are
safe to use in the amounts that would be encountered in a pond without
a problem.....Hell they even sell a top brand name pump with a brass
volute and impeller for koi ponds. Granted there are many many alloys
of brass and bronze, but it shuld not present a problem. Once it gets
covered in the typical patina its basically sealed, and then presents
an even lesser problem not that any exists to begin with.
Don't assume because its ,arked Stainless steel its perfectly safe, as
there is a ton of stainless steel alloys in use out there and not all
are particularly suited for pond use either.......

acidic conditions pH less than 7.0 are more likely to release metal ions into the
water. If the pH of your water is higher then I wouldnt worry. esp about copper.
zinc can cause problems but there are people use galvanized tanks with no problem.
once they been used for a while they are coated with algae. Ingrid

Exactly.......the use of certain metals is a myth that just will not
die.......

I don't know where you live but the PetsMart stores here in TN have the best
goldfish I've ever seen at affordable prices. If you have one of these
stores near you drop in and check out the large selection of goldfish they
carry.
And no, I don't work for them or own stock in the company. :-) I seldom
buy fish as I raise my own but when I do I get 90% from these stores.
