Filter for Kent RO system?

I have the Kent HiS 35 gpd RO system. As far as the first filter cartridge,
which is just for removing particulate matter as I understand it, has
anyone used other types of filters to replace this? Such as for a drinking
water filter or the like?

For example, I can get a 2 pack of 1 micron filters at Wal-mart for the
same as one filter from Marinedepot. (assuming they fit okay)
