Innocent bystanders. Newsgroups get swamped
with off-topic postings from totally unrelated
groups (generally high traffic, controversial
newsgroups) and then the "innocent" newsgroup
tends to lose much of its regular posters.
I've been through a number of these stupid attacks
and tend to stick with "my" groups but it's annoying
at very least to have to mark as read 10 times as
many (or more) off topic as on topic posts. I have a
dialup connection (no cable available in my rural
area and satellite too expensive) so the off topic posts
from many cross-posted irrelevant groups do end up
taking time from other activities - like talking about
FISH!!
