Hi,
I had this problem with a fish about a year ago and when it first happened I
put it in a small 10 gallon "hospital" tank, treated the water with
Swimbladder treatment and stayed up ALL night flipping it over and keeping
it upright with a small net when it turned over.
Like you, I wondered if it would survive, but by the morning it was still
alive and I was half dead through exhaustion:-)
I change my tank to a 56 gallon and found that the larger fish were inclined
to bump into it and the problem occurred again twice in a short space of
time, but fortunately righted itself in a couple of hours.
Like your description it is small with a stumpy body and small tail and it
more wobbles through the water than swims.
I read that some shapes of fish can have this problem, but don't know enough
to comment on that.
All I know is that I have now had to move it to its own tank and give it a
pal like itself and it is content and had no more episodes of the problem.
I've called it Lucky - It sure has been so far!
No harm in trying it if you have a spare tank for it as it would be a shame
to end the life unless you are convinced it is suffering.
Just set the tank up as you normally would and try a bit of TLC- Might work
for you and worth a try
Keep us posted??
Hope this helps you
