View Full Version : Freshwater Clam "developed" in my 1 gallon tank!

December 1st 05, 09:27 PM
I've been pretty lucky with my fis hobby, having recently produced two
batches of Bumble Gobi fry (neither survived). But I was cleaning my 1
gal. bowl that contains an older male betta and 2 clawed African dwarf
frogs (along with a some anacris plants) and while siphoning the water
I disturbed the gravel and there was a freshwater clam about 1/2" long.

I was shocked and called the store I bought the gravel at. It was from
a quarry and not exposed to an aquatic enviornment, so it didn;t come
from there.

The only thing I feed that tank is live bloodworms. Everything in the
tank is extremely healthy and there is minimal green algea growth.
Water changes about once a month and about 1 hour of gentle filtration
twice a day.

Any ideas on how I might have obtained a freshwater clam? It is alive
and opened slightly when new water was interoduced inot the tank. I'll
photograph and document it for a few days to see if it burrows back
into the gravel, but welcome any theories or experiences in this vein.

TIA.

===============
If it's not from the gravel then it had to come in on the plants at a very
tiny size.

The mystery has been solved (I think) and you are spot on! I
"inherited" the frogs and betta from a friend who moved out of state .I
emailed her and she said they had clams at one point and that I must
have used her gravel. I did not. But I did take her plants, so that is
the only place I could imagin they hitched a ride. She hadn't had clams
in years, but I guess they survive much like snails.

Thanks for the theory. I'm certain you are correct.
