I have been battling nitrates for months. Could not keep them under 20. I
do 15-20% water changes twice a week. I tore apart my HOB CPR refugium w/
skimmer and cleaned it. Cleaned all pumps several times. My sun coral is
fed outside the tank and is not put back in until the polyps have closed
over the food and the excess food is blasted off colony. I put a feeding
cap over the open brain so the clowns can't flick the food off. I use no
filter sponges or bio balls and have 35 lbs LR in my 29G tank. Every time I
change water LR is siphoned. I decided nitrates were going to be what they
were.
Last weekend I decided to clean the extra shells that are in the tank for
the blue legged hermits. I didn't believe what was in those shells. They
were full of junk. I took them all out, bleached them, boiled them and
soaked them.
After my 2 water changes this week my nitrates are down to 10 and holding
steady - no increase. I think my filthy shells were fueling my nitrate
problem.
