View Full Version : Help...Nitrate problems

Susan
December 6th 05, 06:36 PM
Hoping someone can help me with this. I have 2 fish and reef tanks one is a
46 gallon bow front and the other is a 29 gallon. The Nitrates in both
tanks seem to be staying off the scale. They aren't over stocked. Fish,
Invertebraes and corals (polys, soft corals) all seem to be doing well
though. I still would like to get it lowered. I change the water in them
but this doesn't seem to help. My question is I have Fluval filters on both
of them. A 204 on the 29 gallon and a 304 on the 46 gallon. I also have
skimmers running on both. A Jebo on the 29 gallon and I upgraded to a
Aqua-Remora on the 46 gallon (Didn't make a difference though.) Is there
something in the Fluvals that I need to take out that could be causing this?
I keep the charcoal changed. Just wandering if it could be the bio ceramic
filtration that could be causing this in the Fluval? Anybody have any
ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

Someone just posted the other day about the same problem. She cleaned out
all her empty hermit crab shells and her nitrates went down.

Denitrification takes place down in the low oxygen areas
of the sand, and in the low oxygen areas in the liverock.

Let your live rock and live sand do the biological
filtering instead of the fluval. You may have to do this
change gradualy.

Thanks, I did happen to read about that and kind of forgot about it. I'll
work on doing that.

Thanks, I'll work on getting the bio ceramic cylinders out of the filter.
Worth a shot.

I have about 2" of Agra-live (think that's how you spell it) sand. My tanks
have been running for a little over a year now.

The finer sand does a better job of denitrifying the
nitrates. You can add some fine calcium sand to improve
denitrification.

Ask your favorate LFS if they can special order World Wide
Imports ATLANT#1 CORAL SAND 20LB. The retail price for it
is only around $10.00. That's what I sell a lot of. It's a
nice fine sand at a good price. Just rense it in a 5
gallon bucket real good, and use a 2" pvc pipe to despence
it into the tank so as to not cloud up the tank.
