View Full Version : Giant Gourami

I recall some people talking about Giant Gouramis a few months ago. I
happened to see some at the Tulsa Zoo, and thought I would share my video of
them. The tank they were in was quite large, probably 20 feet long., 8 feet
deep and a width of 8-12 feet, it had an irregular shape. The tank contained
tiger barbs, bala sharks, dragon fish, clown loaches, a couple different
kinds of catfish. It was quite odd seeing the tiny tiger barbs in with all
the other fish, they were by far the smallest. In the video you can see a
clown nibble on the gourami's feeler. The Giant Gourami's have a really nice
color and they have very large scales.

If you ever pass through Tulsa the zoo added quite a few aquatic exhibits
over the last year. They opened up the Oklahoma Aquarium just outside Tulsa,
and I think it's spurred a little competition between the two facilities.

but as you can see, shes not quite as big yet.

I hope it's years before my GG outgrows the tank. right now it seems to
be growing rather slowly and I feed her quite a bit. My oscar was a MUCH
faster grower.

It looks like I see some silver dollars in there too - am I right
(referencing the above link)? Good luck and later!

You are correct, 4 of them in all.

Interesting, I don't think I will ever have an aquarium big enough to keep
the Giant Gourami's that I saw. Yours seems to have a much smaller forehead
than the ones I saw, I wonder if they grow big knobby heads later, or if
there are several kinds. I looked at a couple pics from your other post but
didn't see the gourami at first. It looks to be only slightly larger than
the angel, I guess it has a lot of growing to do, to get as big and fat as
the ones I saw.

Thanks,

If anything like cichlids, the nuchal hump on their head is a sign of
age, and most prominent on the males.

that's one thing I find interesting about the Giant Gourami's. During
youth they look something like an arrow head, but when they mature they
take on a totally different look.

http://habitatnews.nus.edu.sg/guidebooks/freshfish/text/232.htm

as my GG grows I'll be removing its current tank mates one by one. I'll
also remove some of the decorations leaving a few plants. This should
give an 18-20" GG room to have a good life :) But, I have read that they
can grow close to 30" (gulp) and if that's the case I might have some
issues.
