I recently purchased 9 more Otos for the big tank, but left them in the
office tank for a few weeks to pass the health check. I moved six Otos to
the big tank last week, leaving one Oto in the office tank. (I have no idea
where the other two went.) I then added two SAEs to the office tank for a
stop over on their way to the big tank.
Since the office tank recently underwent a severe Algae cleaning by the
Otos, there is absolutely ZERO Algae left in the tank. So I decided to try
feeding the SAEs some Algae wafers. They found these to their liking and eat
4 or 5 a day. One day I found the remaining Oto fighting over a wafer with
the two SAEs. This is very strange, since the Otos would not touch the
wafers in the past.

Bill,
I couldn't get my otos (also new) to eat the wafers until the algae
was gone, so I think it's a preference kinda thing - once the yummy
stuff is gone, they'll settle for wafers. :-)

When the algae in my tank was gone they refused all other foods and died.

Otos eat wafers (once they've figured out the wafers are food, which
may take quite some time) but do not defend/monopolize food the way
ancistrus and SAE's do, and tend to get bullied & excluded from the
food by SAE's. You may have seen exactly that.
