hi,
my platy has recently had many, many babies a good thing rite? :)
well they are growing now and when i changed the filter in my biorb i
noticed a baby fish stuck inside the filter, well, underneath the
bubble tube but, on top of the filter sponge. when i next changed the
filter i took her out and let her free into the water, as soon as i had
put the filter back in place i thaught nothing else of it, the next day
i noticed that she had swam back into the filter,
i couldnt believe it, what will become of this little madam will she
survive or grow too big for the filter and die in there, should i get
her out or just leave her. i imagine she is happy staying there for
such a long time and then trying and succeding to get back

any advice would be much appreciated,
thanks,

Danny

Get her out and put a sponge or stocking over the intake.

You could buy a filter max III sponge prefilter made by ati. It is a sponge
prefilter that comes with adapters so it can be connected to most if not all
filtration systems used by aquarists. It would probably keep babies out of
your filter. That's what I do for 3 out of 4 tanks. For the one tank I don't
do that with I don't do that and tolerate baby fry fancy guppies getting
into the filter (fancy guppy and turtle tank) because the turtle tank is too
shallow for proper use of a sponge filter, I use a fluval 404 in 4 inch deep
water for that thank. I have been using sponge prefilters in my other tanks
for years without incident. The turtles need shallow water in my tank
because they are of a type that can't swim very well even though they are
aquatic turtles. Good luck and later!

Wherever the filters pulls water from in your tank - cover it with
something. I use small Aquaclear sponges with a hole cut in the middle. I
slide them up over the water intake.

I had a baby Serpae get in there. It died. I think it got too close to
the intake slits and was sucked in. Too small and not strong enough to
swim away. By the time I freed it, it was blood streaked and fins/tail
were ragged. There's not much space between the sponge and the
plastic top of the bubble tube and when you twist the tube to open the
filter they must drag against the sponge/filter.

Not a good situation - try using something as a barrier between the
intake slits and the rocks at the bottom. Maybe cut/shape some sponge
to fit around the whole base unit?
