Hi
I have put new lights in my hood, and since then I am getting this algae
back. When I first set up years ago I had this problem, I know it is
because of the new lights being better has caused this to happen, but I
can't remember what I did last time to stop the problem.
I am adding rowa phos in my fluval to control algae already.
Can anyone help?
I have bought some Bengal cardinals(they are like angel fish only smaller
with white bodies and black striped) recently can anyone tell me how big do
they grow. I have had them about 3 months and they have grown to almost
double.

June,
If you look for them on the 'net, I think you'll find that they are
Banggai cardinals. As far as I am aware, final body-size is about is
about same size as a dwarf angelfish.

Yes, i have the same problem - new to the hobby (6 months) I cant get rid of
the green hair, and lately there's been alot of canyobac. which i just pick
off by hand. ( ew! ) waiting for a RO unit from ebay- hopfully that will
help - i thought cuttin back on water changes would help , but IT DIDNT! (i
think it made it worst)
Heres the set up -

You may want to get a good clean up crew for the Algea until your RO comces
in. Some Blue / red Hermit crabs Turno snails and Emerald Crabs. Talk to
your local LFS about how many of each you should get. once your tank is
clean, don't worry about the clean up crew, they will always find things to
eat in your tank..
For my 75 gal tank I went with 20 Blue Hermits, 15 small Turno Snails and 2
Emerald Crabs, they were out of the Red Hermits, but what I bought did a
nice job in cleaning the tank... I dont need to get the Red Hermits.. Good
Luck

snail - unknown.
Do you recommend more? 33 Gal, with 4 in sandbed and 40lbs of rock?

A lot of folks go overboard on cleanup crews. They stock all these
critters at various rates and when the algae growth is under control
or gone, then a lot of the clean up crews starve...Folks tend to view
clean up crews as just that, and when their food source is gone no
further actions are taken to ensure they still have an adequate supply
of goodies to eat.
Emerald crabs are neat, but their main diet is green bubble algae, but
once that is gone, they start on other algae types and on some corals
and even new coraline is subject to their liking for a food source. I
lean towards the blkue leg hermits myself as they tend to stay fairly
small in size.....Personally I do not trust any crabs being truely
reef safe.....or safe around fish.

for the canyno, go to your local LFS and get Chemi Clean, it will rid the
problem overnight, as far as your clean up crew goes.. i think you have
plenty of crabs and snails

yes I have red hermits, I don't have any green algae as I have rowa phos,
this kills the nutrients that hair/green algae live on so it has nothing to
eat it dies. The rowa phos takes out the phosphate from the tank so green
algae dies. When you need new rowa the green algae starts to grow again.
he phosphate comes from using tap water and no RO water. In the UK its hard
to find a shop that does RO water, there' are not enough people with
marines. I buy all my salt etc from a internet site in Scotland because my
shop is so dear. (that's 300 miles from where I live.

See new post from June, red hermits are nothing to do with this problem (I
have red coraline growing on coral sand. It looks fine on rocks, but not on
sand. Reducing lights helps. I have just changed my lights that is the
problem, only I thought someone had a better answer.
