View Full Version : eBay users petitioning against live animal auctions

There's a discussion thread going on eBay regarding the sales/auction
of loosely-defined "live animals". The current consensus is pretty
negative, although the posters are primarily reacting to dogs and
cats. I've thrown into the fray the question of snails and aquarium
animals, but so far no one has addressed it. I would hate to see eBay
stop the auctions for cleaner crews and coral frags and the like
because some users have issues with pets (companion animals).

If anyone else uses eBay for this purpose, or would be interested in
voicing their opinion on that board, the link is

=^..^=
.... the problem with people these days is that
they've forgotten we're really just animals.

So I guess Ebay users selling aquarium critters are somehow cutting into
your business?

I have ordered many times from Ebay users and always had as good if not
better results than with commercial online dealers, so what is your
argument?

I've pinged - (the manager)
You make some great points !
When people refer to pets they aren't thinking reef critters.
Dang cat lovers !!!

Thanks for pointing this out.

If you read the post more carefully, you'll see that the OP is against
banning these auctions--at least the ones for aquarium animals.

I would agree, however, that auctioning cats and dogs isn't right. Seems to
me that future family members should be chosen in person, but I'll go look
at the thread and see the arguments.

Below is the reply I've recieved from the ebay manager over this
area...reefers are safe !!!

Thanks for getting in touch with me to share your views regarding new
services we're considering to bring sellers and buyers of pets together. It's
clear that our members see a strong distinction between pet adoption (e.g.,
the kind offered by responsible local shelters and advocated by leading
animal welfare organizations) and selling pets for profit, which
unfortunately can be associated with behavior that's inhumane and/or
illegal. I want you to know that we at eBay.com understand and agree with
this distinction.

Based on responses from members like you - including many animal welfare
professionals -- we're going to exclude commercial breeders and for-profit
sale of pets from further consideration. Instead, we'll focus the
discussion on listings of available rescue animals from vetted local
shelters to support responsible pet adoption.

It's clear that we need to proceed very carefully. As our plans take shape,
we'll again ask for input from our community. In the meantime, thanks for
sharing your views with us.

Sincerely,

Lori

Aquarium pets are fine.

Oops,
My Bad.... I read that way wrong...
Ebay is a great way to trade frags and such and I would hate to see them
take that away as well.
