I was thinking of getting into a DIY project....I'm nervous !
I would like to scrap my Canister Filter and stuff Hanging on the back of my tank
for a Reverse Daylight Photosynthesis setup. Your basic Overflow box, refugium, sump and return pump.
My tank is 75gal, the sump I would imagine to be a 29 gallon tank.
and then I would purchase this to make it into what I want.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ECO-Refugium-Components-for-glass-aquarium_W0QQitemZ7733810230QQcategoryZ3212QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem.
I'm having trouble understanding what size return pump to use with a certain size overflow box.
Say my overflow box is rated up to 600 GPH do I go larger GPH with the return pump,
or is the return pump less that 600 GPH ? I've read where you can have a 1200GPH Siphon overflow box
and a 500 GPH return. This sounds like flood to me.
Anyone else have a similar setup ?
Any information or help is very much appreciated,
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
You have a flood situation when your return pump has a
greater flow rate (GPH) than your overflow capacity, i.e. if your
overflow set-up is rated at 1200 GPH and your return pump is rated at
900 GPH at the head in your system, then your 1200 GPH overflow will
only pass 900 GPH (no floods), you must bear in mind that the flow rate
of the return pump will reduce with the hight the pump has to raise
the water (the head) from your sump to the top of your tank. Hope this
makes sense to you.

Also there, chris, i just posted a message where you will see pics of my
sump, refuge setup, but i just have a penguin 802(i think it is 802)
powerhead in ther sump. you want refugiums to flow slowly. put atleast 1
fast powerhead in the tank for your circulation, dont use your sump/refuge
for your main circulation or it will prob be runnign too fast to be an
efficient refuge IMHO.

Or go with a large pump, good overflow, large sump, and
section off an area for low flow refugium.
