Many times we talk about our fish and want to "show" not just "tell."
There is an empty binaries newsgroup: alt.binaries.aquaria
I suggest we adopt this newsgroup so we can tell and show.
I will post a picture I took at feeding time in my 29 gallon tank.
It includes a top feeding Pleco as well as SAEs and one Clown.

Doesn't appear to be on my Newserver but it has to be said that they
have had problems with it - all messages posted prior to 25th December
have been wiped out. Can't find it on properly on google either....
If I could get to it - I think it would be a great idea <g>

Gill,
Is it possible your news server (like mine) is a text group server only ?
I have a choice between servers with my ISP's server carrying binary and
text groups, and a German server (I usually use this as it's a lot faster)
with text groups.
Just a thought

Just host your picture on Photobucket.com & provide a link to the picture.
Its much easier than going from one newsgroup to another.

Hi Peter,
Checked with hubby and you are absolutely right - it's text only. He did
mention that he is thinking of changing Newsreaders (we've had a lot of
problems recently) - so I guess I'll just have to wait til this happens.

I've requested Plusnet add it to their binary server, so I'll have to be
patient.

Testing out your method right now - http://tinyurl.com/7s6rv . You method is
a lot easier than directing people to a specific newsgroup and directing
people to a specific newsgroup needs about the same computing power so those
with older computers should not be more limited when it comes to posting
pictures to a photobucket place and tinyurling them. Thanks for the
recommendation :-). The above link shows a bunch of baby fancy guppy fry in
a mass of hornwort, an adult or two and some pond snails. Good luck and
later! I took the picture a few minutes ago.

I use Giganews.
I have a number of newsgroups I visit each morning, the aba is just
one of many. It has been empty for many months, but my post came in
fine.

Gill,
It depends on your ISP's news server, rather than your news reader software.
If you have subs with other services (like Dick with Giganews ) or your ISP
has a binary server you can change to you'll get it if they carry it.
You probably know this anyway :-)

I use Agent to browse newsgroups and Opera to browse the net, if I
click on a link I open Internet Explorer and get a bunch of pop ups.
I hadn't realized that some people have text only service. What an
unfortunate limitation. I have downloaded a museum size art folio and
lots of music: classical, jazz, and oldies but goodies via the
newsgroups. Not possible with text only.
For me, it is easy to "subscribe" to a variety of newsgroups and
browse through those. Agent allows more than one window, so it would
be possible to have a text group in one window and a binary in
another.
In one art newsgroup I open the pictures in a folder I have
preselected, then I move the picture I want to keep to its permanent
home and delete the rest. In the alt.binaries.aquaria I purge all
after 2 days.
One other thing about web sites, they want information about the user.
I just changed email. Now, instead of a hundred spam emails a day, I
have none, so far. I don't sign up for any site without considering
the possibility of getting on "lists" again. With newsgroup, there is
no sign up. I simply at "rem" to my email address and avoid the
hassle.

For some strange reason, very few servers list alt.binaries.aquaria, on
there news group lists. Including mine, even though it lists other binarie
groups, some with very strange titles .
Also some outdated servers block binaries, for reasons only they know.

I found this host site a few weeks ago which requires no registration and
automatically provides a "tiny" url link - http://tinypic.com/ I don't
think it would be any good for keeping whole albums, as you need a separate
link for each individual photo, but for odd snaps that you want others to
see, it looks good to me.

I bugged Sympatico to carry a.b.a. and they finally did (probably not

I might be changing ISPs anyways, as another provider is bringing
wireless (802.11) to my area, and I'm fed up with dial up. Unfortunately
the new ISP does not have newsgroups :(

There are some pretty good free ones out there. Check alt.free.newsservers.
The one I'm using now is a freebie. Most that are free don't carry
binaries.

Next time learn spambayes (I suggest) - that way you could even handle a
e-mail bomb like me and it would only be a minor inconvenience. When I
occasionally look into my archives to make sure I didn't miss someone
important's e-mail I recently noted that I have been getting 20 spams a day
and I didn't even know it until then. Spambayes reduces spam to practically
nothing. I will practically never give up my e-mail address unless I change
ISPs or some other unforeseen event like that. And I will not munj my e-mail
address - that way anyone will be able to respond to me publicly or
privately especially on these newsgroups.

I didn't know you were on dial up, Netmax. What a bummer! I just
changed to DSL and it makes for a whole different Internet experience.
In addition to dial up and DSL I have, over the years, used ISDN and
satelite services. DSL is by far the most reliable and dependably
fastest. The satelite, at times, was faster, but not dependably.
Another consideration, how much download is allowed. I was always
running into some arbitrary "ceiling" set by DPC, the satelite
service. They would dun me by slowing my speed to dial up for hours
or days.
Cable, wireless and satelite have another characteristic in common,
the speed varies with how many users are active. They are like pipe
lines, a fixed total throughput. Whereas ISDN and DSL have separate
pipes to each user.
Usenet service is not part of many services. I pay $120/year for
Giganews. Their "retention" is awsome, I think they now hold messages
for up to 4 months. Actually this creates a little more control when
first looking at a new site. It takes a long time to download the
messages the first time. It is best to download "headers" only the
first time. Binaries such as music and movies take huge storage
capacity. I believe I now have 200 gigabytes of storage and am using
about 120 gb. Fortunately I no longer download so much.
Weird how some services carry A.B.A and other don't and to "strip" of
the attachments is really strange. I monitor the Giganews newsgroup
and from time to time a thread comparing various services comes up. I
don't recall seeing the stripping brought up as a negative for
competitive services. I will keep it in mind if the discussion comes
up again. (Well, maybe I will remember. <g>)

Fascinating - mark up dsl as possibly being better than cable! I did not
know about the dedicated pipe to dsls, I will certainly keep that very much
in mind! Later!

Be very careful with this wireless broadband service, it's been tried in
australia, and frankly, it's lousy, and very over priced. Here you need a
minimum of 40 people prepaired to subscribe, before they will install the
transmitters, The install is subsidised by HIBIS, but there is no subsidy
for the high cost of using it, and it's not all that fast.
Here's a couple of links, well worth a read, even though they are for us in
OZ, but it will give you a rough idea of what a bloody con, the system is.

Not that strange at all. The ALT hierachie is not part of the big 7
mainstream hierachies and much more anarchic than any other.

Thanks, I'm still trying to get the foreground (Hairgrass) to grow, but the
Loaches are always digging it up.

Which was a stupid idea in the firat place. We made that group
before there was a web. Why do you think it's empty now?

Or contact me. I'm still fool enough to host fish pictures.

********. The alt.mercedes group is fine and never migrated
into rec.
But, if you're a news admin and you're tight on space,
alt.binaries is the first thing to go. I'm surprised
it's even still around.
It was Peter da Silvas idea in 89 or so. Even he thinks
it was a stupid idea now.

Fix your computer. Tell it to use Opera instead of IE for html files
then disable popups. Life is good again.
IE is banned here. It's a disaster.

Why stupid? There are people with no access to a website who could post
pictures there. But I suppose there's no way to keep out the porn.

I don't understand your logic. Pictures can't be posted in text
newsgroups. a.b.a is a binary group. Pictures can be posted.
"We made that group before there was a web." You apparently have been
around far longer than I, but how did the web make obsolete a.b.a and
not make these text groups obsolete.
It is not always empty. It exists. It is easy to monitor a group
empty or not. If someone has a problem where a picture could clarify
the problem, what is wrong with posting the picture on a.b.a and
saying the picture is there? Not everyone has a web page nor wants to
create one to post some pictures.
Please tell me what is wrong with my reasoning.

There are? This is 2006, who has no web access?

If pictures are posted in a.b.a.p then they're visible for one day
or so in some gruop that veyr few people can acces. If they're on
the web they'll be indexed so they're findable and archive.org
ensures they'll always be around. People can befeit from that picture
virtually forever.

Many ISPs do not provide web space. I didn't say access to the web, I
said to a website.
But your point, in another reply, about retention is well taken. I
hadn't thought of that.

Ok, point taken, but you have a mail address using a domain that ends in ".fm"
which I doubt you got off your isp and probably also very unlikely you live in
French Morocco or whatever the hell country .fm got assigned to, jah?

You want your kids and their kids to find and read it don't you?

"visible for one day"?
a.b.a posts stay as long as you let them, limited to the "retention"
of your newsgroup server. Giganews retention for binaries now runs
for 90 days. If you want to keep a picture you can download it,
however, I am suggesting the binary post to be a reference for a post
in a text group.
To me, it is so simple as my Agent news reader is open and I just
select a.b.a. With so few posts, the one corresponding to a text post
is easy to find.
I can understand "one day" visibility as a bad mark, but it just isn't
true. At least in Agent I can set the number of days a post remains
before I purge it. Purging does not remove the post from the server
and if you have purged a post, it is possible to clear the group and
then retrieve again. Not a handy thing. I rarely want to reread or
re view something. If I find it something I want to see/read again, I
save it to my hard disk.

If you want everybody to see it put it on the web. If you don't care
that not everybody can see it or that nothing archives it, then
post to a.b.a.
Even google can't afford the disk space for binaries postings.

Once again you're misreading me. I said "many ISPs" not "my ISP". And
yes, fastmail.fm isn't my ISP, it's a throwaway account for all the
spam.
BTW, "fm" doesn't stand for any country. It stands for "fast mail" :-).
