View Full Version : Horseshoe Crabs

I was at the LFS today and bought a horseshoe crab.
I trusted this LFS and have for years. An example was for the long tentacle
anemone. I was gonna buy one but they guy said not a good idea cuz their
feet were hurt when they were harvested and he showed me the injuries.
Anyway, I decided to read up before I released it in the tank.
It APPEARS that they will eat everything in the dsb. Is this true?
What should I do with this thing?
TIA

I forgot to mention, I know they get big. I'll be moving in a couple of
years anyway so I am not concerned about that.
Is that the only bad thing about them?

Well, I've been googling and it appears I should not add this guy to my
tank.
I guess I should know better than to trust the LFS. Even if they suggest
not buying something.
A lesson learned.
Now what do I do with this hcrab? I dont want to release it in my tank and
its the only one I have.
I wonder if it'd survive floating in the bag till tomorrow.
Thoughts?

he will do fine, drop in some amquel/prime if you have it, otherwise float it in the tank
to keep temp ok, and return him ASAP.

Yes I did. AAMOF, I was thinking that at the LFS. Then I thought, OTOH he
didnt want to sell me an anemone with a damaged foot, so why would he
knowingly lie to me about the hcrab.
Keyword, KNOWINGLY.
The hcrab is still in the bag floating, still alive. Hopefully, he'll make
it and they'll take it back.

I'd add an airstone for the night.

horseshoe crabs are tough little critters, i'v seen them get trapped in tide
pools and dry out, they dig down in the sand and lay in the hot sun for
hours at the time and you can pick them up and they are stil very much
alive. he should be fine in the bag.

Follow up:
I left the critter in the bag overnight. No airstone or anything. Just let
him float in the tank to maintain temperature.
I got up this morning and he was still alive. I took him to work with me at
7:00am and let him float in one of my FW tanks there. I got him back to the
LFS around 10:30am. He was still alive and I told the LFS that AFTER I got
home with him the night before, I learned that he was not compatible with my
set-up. They gave me a CASH REFUND cuz he was still alive, no questions
asked.
Pretty nice huh? Next time, I'll know better than to take their word for
it.
I'm glad nothing had to die for me to learn this lesson =)

I alway check for their return policy of anything I buy from LFS to Online
computer and other stuff ... for anything. I kept hearing people complain
about buying from someplace (especially online website) and can not return
it.

Did the LFS really say that the crab was 100% reef safe and DSB safe or did
you just see a cool creature and only heard what you wanted to hear? I have
had customers come in my store time and time again and just buy whatever
tripped their trigger regardless of whether it was good for them or not.
Don't totally blame the LFS unless you asked the right questions.

I asked if it was reef-safe. The answer was yes, very.
At that time I thought that reef-safe and DSB safe were the same thing.

they are not very reef safe regardless of them consuming your DSB, they eventually will
become a pita in any tank with rocks, fish, corals

in modern day terms "reef safe" is perceived to be something that doesn't
eat corals. while this is a very vague guideline IMO of what reef safe is,
the LFS didn't tell him a lie, they are reef safe, but they do cause havoc
in the tank by digging all in the sand, eating everything in the DSB and
knocking everything in the world around when they do that crazy upside down
swimming that looks like a drunk trying to ride a bicycle.

have anything to do with him, however my koran has been eyeballing him for a while, but he
