View Full Version : Smelly tank
Tennis4you.com

We have 4 goldfish in our 10 gallon tank, all the fish are fairly small. We
also have (2) snails as well. Our tank started smelling pretty bad about a
week ago. We have had the tank for less than 3 months now. The water is
crystal clear, but the smell is bad. I tried changing out 1/4 of the water.
Then 1/2 the water, but no luck. I have even put in a some liquid from the
pet store that is suppose to get rid of odor and cloudiness. Still no luck.
Any ideas?
Thx!!!

I should add that I usually clean out about 1/4 of the fish tanks water
every 1-2 weeks. I also put the aqua-safe stuff into the water before I put
it in the tank.

Do you have a filter of any kind?
Have you done any water tests?
I wouldn't do any more massive water
changes until you diagnose the problem. Start
with water tests.

What does the "aqua-safe stuff" do, specifically
(according to the label)? Do you know whether
your tap water contains chloramines?

Different things can cause this, mine is usually algae. A bloom of
some sort that passes. I'd use carbon in the filter for a while to
adsorb the gasses given off.
I'm guessing that you have checked for over feeding, rotting food and
such.

Aquasafe is a dechlorinator that also deactivates heavy metals and provides
a slime coat while at it. I use it and love how long it lasts and I haven't
been able to find anything wrong with it yet. Good luck and later!

Goldfish can create a lot of waste and thus you need a big adequate tank
with a good filtration system. If you have not done so, add a good
filter to the tank. If you are unable to provide for a larger tank, you
may want to consider doing more regular water change such as once every
few days.
4 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank is really pushing it.

Which brings up the question just how many goldfish would be
comfortable in a 10 gallon tank?
I am specifically talking oranda or celestials here.
Also should one keep any bottom feeders with goldfish? And, do single
goldfish in a tank get lonely?
Thanks!

Healthy well cared for goldfish get LARGE! If you want to keep more than
one then get a 20Long tank. I do believe they get lonely since they're more
or less schooling fish. In my ponds I seldom see one off by itself.
They're usually hanging out and moving around in a loose-knit group. Get
two and at least the 20L tank. With GF you should also get the next size
LARGER filter than recommended for the tank. But watch the current with
those lacking dorsal fins or the bubble eyed fish.

And if they're well fed and cared for they wont be able to turn around in a
10g tank in another year..... :(

Check water parameters including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH and temperature.
do you have 2 LIVE snails in there? dead snails are vomit inducing smell.
you need to take a look at this
http://www.mu.edu/~buxtoni/puregold/care/care1.htm#essentials
you need to be changing a lot of water.
the cheaper the food (the more grains listed rather than fish or krill) and the MORE
you feed the faster the water gets fouled.
move the fish out to a bucket of water with an airstone, clean the tank, get rid of
the snails. start with fresh water. GF wont tolerate bad water for long.

0. the minimum size for GF is 20 gallons (even water temps) and 2 fancy GF. BIG GF
need more like 15 - 20 gallons each with double filtration and aeration.
dont mix any other fish with GF. not good for either.

yep! it should! Make sure fancies have at least 10 gallons per
fish, 20gallons if torpedo shaped fish (Comets, commons)

I also have a 10G tank with 17 goldfishes without problems. Water changes
every two to four weeks should take care of them depending on the feeding.
I do change all the water, so far they are fine.
I got this tank for almost 2 years and it is very easy to care for. No
stress.
In the other hand I just got a 50G with ~ 50 tropical fish and that one
requires way more care than the goldfish.
My advice, keep the 10G change the filter often and watch the feeding. I
must add, my goldfish got huge from overfeeding them. Still, they are
alive.

Interesting - 17 goldfish in a 10 gallon for 2 years? That's wonderful if
true but I have to mention the rest of the world goes by different rules,
try reading rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc for cycling the tank information,
crowding, feeding, and such. There and most other places you will find
information that totally goes against what you have been doing - I have to
say I am rooting for your fish though, as it would be great if everyone
could have that many goldfish in a 10 gallon and not have to worry about
completely changing the filter frequently (usually it causes the tank to
cycle again if the "seeded" filter material is replaced without a backup).
Good luck and later!

this is very unusual. however, some fish can adapt to increasingly toxic water. I
remember my mothers GF tank, 20 gallons with 3-4 GF and it was packed with string
algae that did an incredible job of soaking up the wastes. She really didnt change
any water for almost a year. then the fish started dying. Ingrid
